Florence Rajah, a beloved mother, teacher, and community member, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2024, at Mount St. Joseph’s Hospital in Vancouver, surrounded by her loving family. She was 90 years old.
Born on August 5, 1934, in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, Florence was one of eleven siblings. She is survived by her brother in Jaffna and her sister in Vancouver. On January 12, 1956, Florence married M.S. Rajah (M S) after meeting him during her school years. Together, they had three sons: Eric, Elmo, and Edmund, all born in Sri Lanka.
In Sri Lanka, Florence dedicated herself to teaching elementary school at Lakpahana Seventh-day Adventist School. In 1971, seeking a better future for his family, MS immigrated to Canada with the assistance o f Dr. D.L. Ebenezer, a close friend and schoolmate. Three years later, Florence and her children joined MS in Vancouver. After settling in Canada, Florence embarked on a 35-year career with the Vancouver Home Makers Association, demonstrating her commitment to serving others.
Florence's faith played a central role in her life. She was an active member of her church, participating in various activities and events. Additionally, she volunteered and took on leadership roles in a local Tamil Cultural Association, showcasing her dedication to preserving and sharing her cultural heritage.
Known for her love of entertaining, cooking, and socializing, Florence found great joy in preparing meals for her children and grandchildren (Brenden, Jaden, Derek, Dylon) when they visited. Her unwavering faith was evident in her response: "God will take care of me.”
Florence was preceded in death by her husband, MS, who passed away in October 2010. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched throughout her 90 years. Florence Rajah's legacy of love, service, and cultural pride will continue to inspire those who knew her.
