Alfonso Stephen Ruiz

Alfonso Steven Ruiz, age 82, of Upland, California was called back to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. Alfonso was born in Verde Monte (San Bernardino County), California to Manuel Sr. and Consuelo (Veloz) Ruiz. He was a beloved husband and best friend to Jennie Ruiz for 60 years, and together they had three children who treasured their father, Alfonso Esparza Ruiz, Melody Ruiz Paredes, and Lola Esparza Jollie. He was a loving father-in-law to William Jollie and Jack Paredes and welcomed them into his fold as if they were his sons. He was a doting grandfather to Alfonso John Ruiz, Elizabeth Ruiz NeSmith, Christopher Jollie, William Jollie, Corey Jollie, Jeremy Paredes, Anthony Paredes, Adam Paredes and to his granddaughters-in-law, Chris’s wife, Natalie, Billy’s wife, Holly, Corey’s wife, Mimi, and to his grandson-in-law, Elizabeth’s husband Ricky. He adored his great-grandchildren, Dominic Jackson Ruiz, Natalie Ruiz NeSmith, Sebastian Ruiz NeSmith, Isabel Ruiz NeSmith, Milla Jollie, and Charlotte Jollie. His brothers Fidel, Freddie, Willie, Frank, and Manuel and sister Elvira Martinez preceded him in their departure from this life, and he is survived by his sisters Carmen, Stella, and Margaret. His love extended to many friends as well.

Despite the hardships and challenges of his youth, Al always maintained an optimistic outlook on life (“Tomorrow is another day”). He advised others to get some rest and things would be better. He believed in focusing on strong mental health, and if that meant walking, resting, SNACKING, or whatever, then it was all good.

Alfonso began a long career in law enforcement as a corporal in the Ontario Police Department reserves. He was a dedicated peace officer, who truly sought to help others. He reached out to those in need by packing extras in his lunch so he was always prepared to share. During his career, he worked for Bellevue Cemetery, Chaffey College, General Dynamics, Chino Hospital, and San Antonio Hospital. Alfonso had a strong work ethic, was punctual, and rarely missed a day of work. He was committed to providing for his family and allowing his precious wife to be home with their children.

Throughout his life, he enjoyed archery and shooting at the gun range. He was very proud of his sharpshooting skills. He was also an avid reader of history. His interests included American, Mexican, and local history. Best of all, he was a storyteller, who told of his life and memories. He would sometimes include spooky stories and legends which made him all the more fascinating and endearing. Wow! Being around him was never dull! On top of this, he loved music, particularly Mariachi, Pedro Infante, Patsy Cline, and Hank Williams. He and his wife shared a special favorite song, sung by artist Whitney Houston, I Will Always Love You. He was quite a crooner too, singing throughout the day.

Alfonso never hesitated to show kindness and his witty side. He had a positive outlook on life and encouraged others to hope for a better tomorrow. He loved spending time in nature, just enjoying God's creation. He would often enjoy a day at the park with his wife and just marvel in the birds, squirrels, and anything else that moved. Animals brought him so much joy, and just before he died, he had adopted three cats who loved him dearly. He was always crushed when he lost a pet, and recently he lost his sweet Shih Tzu and constant companion, Savache. Most of all, he delighted in being around children. He was in his element when he spent time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

If you ever crossed his path, chances are he truly cared for you, and kept you in his thoughts and prayers.

A viewing of Alfonso will be held on Friday, December 8, 2023, from 11:00-1:00 PM followed by a funeral service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Stone Funeral Home, 355 East 9th Street, Upland, CA 91786. Following the funeral service will be a graveside service from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM at Bellevue Memorial Park, 1240 West G Street, Ontario, CA 91762. Alfonso loved blue, and to celebrate his life, we are asking that those attending his funeral or even those who cannot wear something blue to commemorate him on this day.
