Maria Guadalupe R. Salinas

Maria Guadalupe Salinas was born in the town of Montemorelos, Nuevo Leon, Mexico on July 9, 1929. Maria was 1 of 8 children born to Manuel Rodriguez and Elvira Barocio. The family moved to Hualahuises, Nuevo Leon, Mexico when Maria was a young child. Maria lived on a small family ranch where her father, Manuel, was a local businessman/town leader and her mother, Elvira, was a homemaker. The family was close knit and enjoyed the quiet life of rural living. Maria was an avid baseball player and fan of the sport. In later life, she was a big fan of the Price is Right watching it daily until her final day. She also enjoyed helping her parents maintain the small family ranch.

Maria’s life would change forever when her brother-in-law’s best friend was smitten with Maria. The couple’s first date involved a movie where her future husband, Raul, fell asleep throughout the entire movie. Maria stated that she would never go on another date with Raul. This would be a sneak peek into the couple’s 65 year relationship. Raul would travel to Mexico on two separate occasions to ask for Maria’s hand in marriage only to be told to leave by Manuel. This did not deter Raul. A yearlong correspondence campaign was invoked by Raul that saw the couple write letters back and forth until Maria’s heart was won over. Raul returned to Mexico to marry his bride and brought her back stateside to the city of Corpus Christi, Texas.

The couple began a family of their own a short time into the marriage. Maria was a homemaker who also took on side jobs to help with the family finances. This dedication to hard work and family unity ensured the lives of their children and grandchildren would be easier. Maria was heartbroken when her husband left this world before she did. Raul would return and be reunited with his bride for what would have been their 68th wedding anniversary.

Maria is survived by her four children, Sylvia (Erbey), Raul (Cleo), Robert, and Hector, along with a myriad of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There are not enough words in the world that could describe the impact Mom/Abuelita had on this world. She will be forever missed and loved; but a piece of her will continue to live on via her family. Thank you for everything, Mom/Abuelita. We love you.

Holy Rosary will be recited at 11:00a.m. followed by a Memorial Mass to be celebrated at 11:30a.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 4411 Moana Dr., San Antonio, TX 78218. A committal service will follow at 1:15p.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, Shelter #2, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, TX 78209.
