David was a veteran serving in the United States Marine Corps. He earned the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged in 1975.
David earned a Bachelor of Science degree graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Texas A&M San Antonio. He spent a number of years teaching math to secondary students in charter schools and Christian schools.
David was a 25 year member of the Church of the Resurrection in Windcrest, TX. He was a Lay Eucharistic Minister, a Lector, and a member of the Pastoral Care Team. He served on the vestry this past December. He was also a delegate to the Diocesan Council on several occasions.
David had a great passion for the martial arts and was extremely helpful in his dojo (training place), and assisted in teaching students of all ages and ranks. He received his black belt apprentice rank in 1985, first degree black in 1988, second in 1989, third in 1995, fourth in 2003, and fifth in 2009. In 2018, David received the Master of the Year Shito Ryu Award from the Universal Martial Arts Hall of Fame.
In addition to his karate rankings he had advanced belt ranking in several Okinawan weapons (bo, sai, tonfa, and nunchaku). David was certified as a karate judge by the US National Karate Federation, and officiated at many local, state, and national competitions. He participated in many karate and weapons seminars under such notables as the late Grandmaster Teruo Hayashi of Osaka, Japan, and Master Akio Minakami of Seattle, WA. His presence will be dearly missed.
He is preceded in death by his 1st wife, Cynthia Bernice Valerio Sipes, his second wife Janice Mundy Detreville Hardwick, Father Andrew H. Hardwick, Mother Ida Margaret Hardwick and Brother Andrew W. Hardwick.
He will be remembered by his Life Partner Pamela M. Round, his siblings Roy D. Hardwick, Michael L. Hardwick, and Pamela Jo Garza. His step children Israel Raphael Rodriguez, wife Lupe, Valerie Ann Rodriquez Garcia, husband Edgar, and Javier Rene Rodriguez.
A visitation for David will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2019 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Road, Universal City, TX 78148. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at 10:30 AM at Church of the Resurrection, 5909 Walzem Rd, Windcrest, TX 78218. A committal service will occur Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
In lieu of flowers, David's family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Church of the Resurrection in his memory.
