Born in Newark in 1939 to the late Albert and Dorothy Ambacher (née Porter). Al was a graduate of Newark VoTech High School, and an Honorably Discharged Veteran of the United States Navy.
In 1961 he married the love of his life Peg and together started a family in 1962 residing in the Vailsburg section of Newark until moving to Union in 1972. Al was employed as an Underground Network Mechanic for PSE&G in Irvington for 38 years, retiring in 1998.
Upon his retirement, Al's title changed to Poppy. During this time he was dedicated to raising his grandchildren and being their biggest fan in all they accomplished. In the ensuing years, his title changed yet again to Poppy Al, as he doted upon his great grandchildren and remained their biggest fan.
Al was the Head Usher for Sunday morning mass at Holy Spirit for many years. Peg and Al were noted for their amazing ability to celebrate holidays in grand style, Christmas Eve and New Years Day in particular, even if he complained about it every single year. Al was a lifelong avid Yankee fan, dedicating an entire room in his house to the Bronx Bombers
He was predeceased by his grandson Michael.
Al is survived by his wife of 61 years, Peg (née Lawless) of Union, his children; Bill and his wife Linda of Chandler, Arizona. Daughter Donna of Union and his son Timothy, also of Union his and companion Michele. His Grandchildren; Jocelyn Hutton and her husband Ken, Ryan Ambacher and his wife Carolyn, Brittany Buchanan and her companion James, Lauren Buchanan and her fiancé Sam. Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt by God's decision to call
home our patriarch, but for those of us who remain, though broken hearted, will forever be grateful for his love, guidance, patience and advice. We will never forget his smile, the laughter we shared and the impact his life had on each of us.
Rest Easy Dad. We'll take it from here.
In lieu of flowers the family requests you make a donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
