Walter served as a veteran in the US Air Force, dedicating himself to four tours in Vietnam, followed by two years in the reserves. After his military service, he worked for Bell Atlantic, now known as Verizon, for over 30 years before retiring in 2004.
Walter had several hobbies and interests. He was an avid sports fan and especially loved cheering for his favorite team, the New York Yankees. He had a deep appreciation for music of all genres and was passionate about collecting coins and stamps.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Walter and Sophie Bartkus, as well as his brother Lawrence. He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie Bartkus (née Devaney); his children, Kireen (Wayne) Slocum, Amanda Bartkus, and John Bartkus; his granddaughters Courtney (Justin), Shayna, and Malinda; and three great-grandchildren. Additionally, he leaves behind three brothers-in-law, six sisters-in-law, five nephews, seven nieces, and sixteen great-nieces and nephews.
A visitation to pay respects to Walter will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Leber's Funeral Home, located at 2000 Kennedy Blvd, Union City, NJ 07087. A funeral mass will take place on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at 12:15 pm at St. Lawrence Church in Weehawken, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude's Cancer Society in Walter's name.
