Hugh Murray Smith Jr.

Hugh M. Smith Jr. 60, beloved husband to Helen and devoted father to Samantha, passed away Thursday from complications related to cancer. The longtime Union City resident was born in Ft. Monmouth and raised in Hazlet, N.J. He had worked on the commodities Coffee, Sugar and Cocoa Exchange before being a stay-at-home-father for his loving daughter, Sam. A former member of the Monmouth Rugby Club, Hugh loved his family and enjoyed beach vacations, especially on Long Beach Island.

The son of Carolyn and Hugh M. Smith, Sr., he was born Aug, 15, 1956. He was the son-in-law of Helen M. and John F. Doyle, of Hazlet, N.J.

He is survived by his wife, Helen and their 12-year-old daughter, Sam; his mother, Carolyn; sister Dana of Hazlet, NJ; brother, Bruce and his wife, Susan of Richmond, Ken; brother, Matthew and his wife, Jennifer, of Columbus, Ohio and Douglas Smith, of Hazlet, N.J. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews along with sister-in-law, Patty and her husband John Hayden; sister-in-law Mary Lou and her husband, Mike Harrold; brother-in-law John Doyle and his wife, Peggy; sister-in-laws Kathy Doyle and Anne Doyle and brother-in-laws Michael Doyle and William Doyle.

Hugh’s life celebration will include a visitation to be held on Wednesday, from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Leber Funeral Home, 2000 J.F. Kennedy Blvd in Union City. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m., at the Chapel of St. Francis Academy, 1601 Central Ave Union City, NJ.
