Visitation will be held at Lloyd James Funeral Home on Sunday, June 24, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Dr. Waldron was born in Shreveport on July 3, 1936, the son of the late Anna Belle Gibson and Willie Harold Waldron. He was a graduate of Gladewater High School and North Texas State University. In 1961 he received his Doctorate of Medicine at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, going on to complete his internship at the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Colo., and his residency training in anesthesiology at the John Sealy Hospital at UTMB.
In 1965-1966 he proudly served his country as an anesthesiologist in the United States Navy with the 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, in DaNang, Vietnam, ultimately holding the rank of lieutenant commander. Among his decorations was the Navy Commendation Medal, presented in 1968 in recognition of meritorious service.
After completing his active service in the Navy at Parris Island, S.C., Dr. Waldron came to Tyler in 1966 to establish a practice in anesthesiology. Almost twenty-five years later he retired from a private practice characterized by a profound sense of service. For five more years he was on the staff of the Trauma Center at East Texas Medical Center Tyler.
Dr. Waldron had many diverse interests. His love of aviation began in his teenage years, when he cleaned out airplane hangars in exchange for flying lessons. In later years he relished co-owning planes that he might fly to Biloxi, Mississippi, for dinner, or to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for vacation, or to any place necessary when someone’s friend or family member required quick transport for any reason. Dr. Waldron was also an avid fisherman and sportsman all his life.
After his retirement, Dr. Waldron sang in the choir and taught Sunday school at First United Methodist Church of Gladewater. In recent years he was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Tyler.
He was preceded in death by Claudia Ann Waldron, his beloved wife of 48 years, and his sister, Jean Shipp. His survivors include daughters Brenda King and husband Philip of Guilford, Conn., Amy Waldron of Portland, Ore., and Susan Helbig and husband Kyle of Whitehouse; son Richard Waldron of Tyler; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Regional East Texas Food Bank, 3201 Robertson Road, Tyler, 75701, or Heart to Heart Hospice, 1402 Rice Rd., Suite 100, Tyler, 75703.
