Paula (Pauline) Permenter Hammond, 95, beloved mother and "Nana" went home to be with the Lord on October 22, 2018. Services for Mrs. Hammond will be held on Friday, October 26 at 1 pm at First Christian Church in Tyler under the direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at Cathedral of the Pines.
She was born in Shelby County near Center on July 2, 1923 to the late Johnnie Frances and Dorothy Permenter. She married Sterling Mims Hammond on Valentine's Day in 1950 and was preceded in death by her husband on June 3, 1978.
After graduating from Center High School at the age of 16, she moved to Dallas and graduated from Draughon Business College. After a brief period of employment with Northrup Grummond, she joined the United States Navy and proudly served her country during WWII. The Navy sent her to Hunter College in New York City for training. She became an AMM 2nd class and went on to get her pilot's license. In her many years as a "stay at home mom", she was involved in a variety of church, school, scouting, and garden club activities. She was a gifted seamstress of which her daughter proudly benefited. A long-time member of First Christian Church, she served on various committees and was a member of the diaconate and an elder. She is remembered for her many years of volunteering at the Christian Life Center, Meals on Wheels, assisting with Voter's Registration and the polls on voting days. She attended Tyler Junior College and obtained her real estate license. For 13 years, she worked with the Automobile and Registration Department in Smith County retiring in 1990.
Survivors include her daughter, Paula Lynn Hammond and grandson, Jason McNatt and wife Letecia McNatt, great-grandson, Jackson McNatt of Dallas and several nieces and nephews.
If desired, memorials may be made, in honor of Mrs. Hammond to the American Heart Association, National Alzheimer's Association, or First Christian Church of Tyler, Texas.
