Martha Carroll was born February 22, 1923 in West Virginia to Ernest and Jettie Campbell. She went to be with her Lord on June 28, 2024. She always enjoyed celebrating her birthday with George Washington. Her parents lovingly named her Martha after the first president's wife. Shortly after marrying, Martha and her first husband, Walter Mitchell, left WVA for Southwestern Seminary.
Martha served with her pastor husband in churches located in West Virginia, Virginia, District of Columbia, New Mexico, and Texas. After Walter's death in 1962, Martha received her Home Economics Teaching Degree from Baylor University.
Martha married Willard Carroll in 1969, and moved to Abilene, Texas. She taught middle school and in Abilene High School, and especially enjoyed her Home Development classes. Along with Willard, she also was involved in the Taylor County Jail Ministry before his death in 2004. They were weekly involved in the Gideon International Ministries.
Martha had a deep faith and trust in God and His word. She taught Bible classes for years. She loved people, loved to laugh, always had a smile, and possessed a kind, giving, and gentle spirit. She was devoted to her family.
Survivors include children: Jon and wife Ann Mitchell of Tyler, Texas; Martha and husband Walter Guillaume of Tyler, Texas; Tim Mitchell of North Richland Hills, Texas; and Mary Beth Malkowski of Tyler, Texas; Bill and wife Pat Carroll of Abilene, Texas. Grandchildren include Malia Nix of Tyler, Texas; Jonathan and wife Christie Mitchell of Carterville, Illinois; Micah and wife Maggie Mitchell of Ft. Worth, Texas; David Guillaume and family of Atlanta, Georgia; Matthew Mitchell and Melody Mitchell of Euless, Texas; Mark Mitchell of Hurst, Texas; Merritt Mitchell of Alexandria, Virginia; Maritta and husband Jordan Smith of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; and Marshall and wife Cherith Mitchell of Springfield, Missouri; Josh and Erin Carroll in Saginaw, Texas; Melissa and Brad Magers in Tuscola, Texas; Seth and Rachel Carroll in Abilene, Texas. Great grandchildren include Kathryn Nix, Sam and Logan Nix, Annie Mitchell, Gracie Mitchell, Eli Mitchell, Mollie Mitchell, Max Mitchell, Elizabeth Mitchell, Abby Guillaume, Aubrey Guillaume, Alexandra Mitchell and Ellington Mitchell, Jadyn Carroll, Eliana Carroll, Kaylee Carroll, Emmie Carroll, Jackson Slaughter, Parker Carroll, and Avery Carroll.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 - "But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus."
A Celebration of Life service for Martha will be held on Friday, July 5, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Lloyd James Funeral Home with Rev. Kevin Burdette officiating. She will be laid to rest at Tyler Memorial Park Cemetery.
