Joyce Calhoun Davis was born on October 6, 1932 and was called to be with our Lord on March 9, 2020 at the age of 87. Joyce was one of ten children born to Grover Calhoun Sr. and Susie Glenn Calhoun on the Calhoun farm outside of Ola, Texas. Joyce grew up on the farm with her siblings experiencing the excitement, chores, hardships, and joys of a working farm with a large family. She attended Kaufman schools and graduated form Kaufman High School in 1951. While in high school she played basketball, volleyball, and her favorite subject was Latin. After graduating high school she moved to Dallas, Texas and began working in the banking field, eventually moving to Houston, Texas where she met and married Hubbard Davis Jr. on November 11, 1953. She continued to work in the banking field and in 1960 they were blessed with the birth of their son, Patrick Davis. In 1965 Joyce and her husband and son moved to Tyler, Texas where she continued working in the banking field, working for People’s National Bank and eventually retiring from Bank of America. Joyce enjoyed fishing with her family, spending time with family in Kaufman, and spoiling her grandchildren as well as reading westerns.
Joyce was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents Grover Calhoun Sr. and Susie Calhoun, her husband Hubbard Davis Jr, and four of her siblings; Bonnie, Grover Jr., Helen, Mildred, and Ruby. She is survived by her son Patrick Davis, daughter-in-law Erin Davis, grandson Austin Davis, and granddaughter Abbey Davis. She will always be remembered as a kind, caring, and loving person.
A Memorial Celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 10, 2020 in the Chapel of Lloyd James Funeral Home with Rev. Royce Calhoun, Ph.D. officiating. She will be laid to rest at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery, following the Memorial Service.
