Loraine was born May 6, 1917 in Franklin, Idaho, to John Milton and Sarah (Sadie) Shumway Biggs. She attended grade school in Greenwood and high school in Hazelton, where she was active in speech, drama, and basketball. She attended the University of Idaho, Southern Branch (later Idaho State University) where she was President of Women’s Athletics and a member of the Associated Women Students. She received her teacher’s certificate and later her Bachelor of Arts degree from ISU. She taught school for a number of years in Shoshone, Burley, and Twin Falls.
In 1943, Loraine married Elden James Haskell in the Salt Lake Temple. They farmed in the Burley area until 1960 when they purchased a motel in Twin Falls. Loraine was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in a variety of capacities including president of the YWMIA and as a member of the Relief Society Stake Board. She was a long-time member of a literary club and an avid reader throughout her life. She also enjoyed music, and was an amateur, self-taught pianist. Loraine loved cooking and entertaining at home, especially on family holiday occasions.
After retiring from their motel business in 1977, Loraine and Elden served a two-year church mission at the Hawaii Temple Visitors’ Center. Following this mission, they served for five years in the Boise Temple.
Loraine was preceded in death by her parents and in 2008 by her husband of 64 years, Elden Haskell. She is survived by her sister Norma Hellewell; her son Jay (Linda) Haskell; her two daughters Marcia Carlson and Holly Anderson (Jack Hourcade); her eleven grandchildren Guy (K’Lyn) Haskell, Tamra (James) Phillips, Doug (Tynna) Haskell, Susan (Blake) Enser, Nancy (Mark) Pearce, Jayson (Sandi) Haskell, Brad (Penny) Carlson, Amy (Darby) Heidemann, Kimberly (Scott) Latham, Kirk (Meredith) Anderson, Alex Anderson, 36 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Eastland chapel. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park. Condolences may be left at www.whitemortuary.com
