Maxine Lund Walker

Maxine L. Walker, age 94, of Northport, died August 17, 2016, at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, August 22, 2016, at First Baptist Church with Carl Wells officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be Sunday, August 21, 2016, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry H. ""Johnny"" Walker.Survivors include her daughter, Susan W. Allen; son, John Randall ""Randy"" Walker (Wanda); special friends and caregivers, Barbara Townsend, Ann Nuckols, Sylvia Meadows, Kathleen Baughman and Earl McDaniel; grandchildren, Lynda Ruda (Craig), Bryan Allen (Deacy), Misti Mathews (Scot) and Meredith McCracken (Luke); great-grandchildren, Margaret and Ann Harper Allen, Cole and Hunter McCracken, Jacob, Jordan, Rachael and Joshua Mathews; and special companions, Sox, Taco and Patches.Maxine was born in Colquet, Minnesota in 1921. She graduated nursing school in 1943 and joined the Air Force and served from 1943 until 1945.Maxine married Johnny Walker, a pilot, in April of 1944. She graduated from the University of Alabama and finished her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing in 1953 and Master's program in 1957. In 1953, she started with DCH School of Nursing Program. She was the school Health Nurse and taught maternity nursing from 1953 – 1957. In 1957, she became the Assistant Director of the School of Nursing. In 1960, she became the Director of the School and stayed in that capacity until the program closed in 1978 at which time most hospital diploma programs were closing. She held the position of Director of Clinical Affiliated Programs from 1978 until retirement in 1987.Maxine served four years on the National Accreditation Board, in many National Honor Societies and Nursing Organizations and in 2003 was nominated and elected to the Alabama Nursing Hall of Fame.Maxine served as a volunteer for the past 25 years which were in the Lewis and Faye Manderson Cancer Center.Honorary pallbearers are First Baptist Church.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Lewis and Faye Manderson Cancer Center, DCH Foundation or FOCUS.
