She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Dollie Brewer; husband Johnnie Shuttlesworth; husband Sam Johnson; son Jerry Shuttlesworth; sisters Gladys Darnell, Pauline Bailey, and Irene Hubbard; sister-in-law U.L. Rice; and foster sister Gwendolyn Howard.
Lorene is survived by her sons Billy Shuttlesworth (Judy) and Ronnie Shuttlesworth; her daughter-in-law Pam Shuttlesworth; grandchildren Rachel Thompson (Jacob), Jeremy Shuttlesworth, Jami Compton (Jason) and Johnny Shuttlesworth (Anna); and great grandchild Emery Jones. She also leaves behind a host of nieces who treated her like a queen: special niece and caregiver Deborah Clements, Peggy Adams, Shirley Whitaker, Martha Pickrell, Donna Powell, Carol Tidmore, Patsy Williams, Emma Pearson, Diane Bridges, and Eloise Harrell. Lorene is also survived by her foster sisters Rose Wilson (Matt) and Barbra Goodwin, her stepchildren Ronald Johnson (Kathy) and Bonnie Johnson, and a host of family and friends.
Lorene was dedicated to working hard her whole life, spending forty years in retail at Pizitz, McRae’s, Parisian, and Belk, where she was appreciated by her co-workers and the customers she greeted with a smile, complete with her trademark red lipstick. For many years, Lorene enjoyed bowling with her friends and family, winning some tournaments and having fun. Gathering with her family was always important to Lorene, often over lunch at Logan’s, a trip to Peach Park, or just riding around. Lorene was an excellent cook, known for her fruitcake cookies and pineapple pudding, among other dishes. She was a committed member of Duncanville Baptist Church and Sandra Rice’s Sunday School class. Lorene and her family greatly appreciated the kindness and generosity of the church and community during her recent illness.
