John Wayne Hoggle, a lifelong resident of Tuscaloosa, passed away on Monday evening April 22, 2024 in his room at the Crimson Village Retirement Community. He was the youngest child of Emma Lee Booth Hoggle and Harvey Harmon Hoggle also of Tuscaloosa.
Born on September 4th, 1935, his mother wanted to name her new son John Hoggle. His father said there were a lot of John Hoggles in the world, so his mother said they would name him John Wayne Hoggle and call him Wayne. That ended the discussion and his mother got her way. Wayne had three siblings, two older brothers, William W. Hoggle and Hubert A. Hoggle and a sister Mildred L. Hoggle Deslattes. Like his siblings, he was born in Shadydale, a small neighborhood on the west side of Bryce Hospital where his father worked.
Wayne’s father died from a heart attack when he was only eight years old. Therefore, his brothers and his brother-in-law, Calvin L. Deslattes, were instrumental in Wayne’s early life. They were the role models that helped him grow into the man he became. He was also very close to his sister who played a big role in his early life. She made sure Wayne went to school each day and she helped him with his school work.
All of the people that lived in Shadydale worked for Bryce Hospital, a state medical facility. The state was not known as a high paying employer especially during the depression years of the 1930s. Accordingly, the family engaged in various activities to earn additional money. His mother had a cow or two that enabled her to sell milk and butter to the other neighbors. His father purchased laying hens, two hundred of them, which provided plenty of eggs for the family and others to sell. Also, they had a large garden which provided plenty of vegetables for the family and additional amounts to sell. Wayne’s first sales experience was selling excess produce, eggs, milk and butter to the other residents of Shadydale and the military families living in Ridgecrest apartments during the war years of the early 1940s. Because of these efforts, the family always had plenty to eat and a roof over their heads.
Wayne attended Shelton Trade School in the early 1960s and completed the machinist training program. Upon graduation, Wayne was gainfully employed as a machinist for over seventeen years. Except for some temporary assignments with the U.S. Corp of Engineers, Wayne became self employed and never worked for another “boss” again. He was licensed in the used automobile business and bought and sold auto parts for many years. His early sales experience when he was growing up served him well. He liked the process of selling things.
Wayne never married but his brothers and sister gave him five nephews and five nieces. He lived with his sister and brother-in-law along with their three daughters and one son. Because he lived with them, they thought of Wayne more as an older brother than an uncle. He is survived by nieces Barbara Sue Fulmer (George), Linda Joy Laminack, Patti Anne Scozzaro (Ross) and nephew Doug Deslattes.
William and Eloise Hoggle gave him three nephews, William Michael (Holly), Ronald Lynn (Gail) and James Kenneth (Dulcie) Hoggle. Michael Hoggle passed away in 1996, an early death that was very hard for all the Hoggle family to accept. Wayne is survived by nephews Ronnie and Kenny Hoggle.
His brother Hubert and his wife Mary B. Hoggle gave him two more nieces, Robin Hoggle Noland (Scotty), Kelly Hoggle Marcum (Jay) and the youngest nephew David Hoggle (Tammy). Wayne is survived by sister-in-law, Mary B. Hoggle and her three children.
The families of the nieces and nephews have given Wayne a large number of grand nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, the 27th of April 2024, at the Hoggle Family plot in Tuscaloosa Memorial Cemetery. The family will greet guests and friends at 10am in the Chapel of the Heritage Chapel Funeral Home located across the road from the cemetery.
Pallbearers include Ronnie Hoggle, David Hoggle, Conner Davis, Steve Slough, Ross Scozzaro, and Gene Laminack.
The surviving family wishes to thank the residents, staff and the good care they provided to Wayne during his last years.
