TUSCALOOSA – James Avery “Sonny” Logan passed away on the morning of July 7, 2022 following a lengthy battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary fibrosis. Born on April 10, 1945 in Tuscaloosa, he was proud to say he was born on the campus of the University of Alabama, site of DCH at the time. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Pauline Logan.
Survivors include Martha Logan, his wife of 56 years, two sons Jay and Paul (Rose), three grandchildren Olivia “Gracie,” Luke and Ruby, one sister Margie Miller. Other survivors include his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill and Sharon Stringfellow, nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
Sonny graduated from Tuscaloosa High School where he participated in sports, excelling in shot put and discus in which he set several state records. He then attended Shelton State Trade School where he was president of the first SGA and graduated with a degree in refrigeration and air conditioning. He later attended the University of Alabama, Auburn, and received a BS degree from Athens State University. He worked locally in the HVAC industry, a longtime member of the Local 372 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union before accepting a position leading the HVAC department at Shelton State. He was active in numerous professional organizations and was instrumental in establishing the Alabama Council of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Educators of which he was elected the first president. He was a finalist for the state Chancellor’s Award while teaching at Shelton State and worked on many state curriculum committees. He was well loved and respected by both his colleagues and students who frequently contacted him for advice years after graduation.
He was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and as a member of numerous committees, most notably the building committee and those working with children and youth who held a special place in his heart. He participated in several mission trips to sites throughout the southeastern U.S. as well as always assisting those in need locally when asked to do so.

All services for Sonny Logan will be private. He will be laid to rest in Memory Hill Gardens.
