COTTONDALE – Billy Wayne Nichols, age 75, passed away November 28, 2021 at his home. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, December 2, 2021 at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Chad Lowery officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening, December 1, 2021 at Memory Chapel.
Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by his parents, Helen Camp and Cullen Nichols; son, Micah Wayne Nichols; and sister, Nellie Sue Caffee.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa “Treat” Sewell Nichols; sons, Chad Nichols (Tonya) and Brad Nichols (Rosa); sister, Melissa Camp Platt (Hardy); brother, Terry Nichols (Sherry); and grandchildren, Jessica Nichols, Mackenzie Nichols, Chase Nichols, Zoey Nichols, and Blake Nichols.
Billy was a sergeant in the US Army where he served two tours, and was stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas. When he was discharged in 1968, he returned to Bibb County and later moved to Tuscaloosa. He worked at Gulf States Paper for several years. He then became a certified Master Mechanic. He went to work for Deloach Lincoln Mercury in 1981, which later became Madden Lincoln Mercury, and worked there until 2009 when he retired. Billy was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He loved his kids, but said there was nothing like those grandchildren. He was a faithful Christian man who loved the Lord and would tell anybody. He started singing gospel music 40 years ago with Fran Barger when he joined Old Salem Baptist Church. They later started a group called “Southern Gospel Sounds” where they would travel to any church to share their music for the Lord. He loved his singing; if he couldn’t sing he would whistle. Billy never met a stranger, and loved to help anyone he could who was in need. He will be truly missed by all.
Pallbearers will be Chase Nichols, Justin Nichols, Nicholas Bibby, Tyler Sewell, Chris Sewell, Jeff Sewell, and Blake Nichols.
Honorary pallbearers are Southern Gospel Sounds (Fran Barger, William Lee, Jesse Malone, Jimmy Green, and the late Gene Johnson); Old Salem Baptist Church; Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center; Dr. Mohammad Azam; and Amedisys Home Health Care.
