Robert (Bob) Daniel Froehlich was born in Dickinson, North Dakota to Daniel and Katherine Froehlich on February 18, 1935.He was joined by his sister, Marleen and brother, Richard shortly thereafter. After graduating high school in Spokane, he joined the United States Navy in 1958. Robert proudly served the in the United State Navy for 28 years, retiring with the rank of Master Chief of NAS Whidbey Island, the highest-ranking petty officer at the Naval Air Station. During his time in the Navy, he received an Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Olympic College in Bremerton, Washington. After retirement, he worked for Boeing for 12 years, continuing to put to work his love of mechanical engineering.
Robert married the love of his life Caroline on December 19, 1964 in Mt Vernon, Washington. Together they raised four children, Wayne, Michael, Glenn and Valerie. These four children gave them 10 grandchildren and more great-grandchildren than one can count.
In the early 70’s, Robert decided to build an experimental aircraft, a Mustang II from scratch. In June of 73, all his hard work paid off, and N33RF got airborne for the first of many flights. Over the years he would own a Piper Pacer and a Cessna 175. His next project was to fully restore a 1955 Ford Crown Victoria. The deep purple Crown Victoria was Caroline and Roberts pride and joy, winning many awards at various car shows.
For many years the two enjoyed traveling in their RV exploring the states and enjoying each other’s company. A few of their favorite destinations were Yuma, AZ for most winters, leaving right after Christmas. At Ocean Shores they would camp with close friends Sandy and Doug. And every August, you would find them at the Arlington EAA fly in. Robert was a longtime volunteer and judge for the many experimental aircraft that attended. He was even a judge for the largest EAA fly in, in Oshkosh Wisconsin.
Robert passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home on July 27, 2024, surrounded by family and loved ones. He is preceded by his parents and sister Marleen. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years and all of his many children and grandchildren.
