Mary was a loving and caring woman full of grace and beauty. She had a quiet way of making you feel special and even at the end of her time here on earth she placed the needs of those around here above her own needs. Mary loved and collected hearts and was never afraid to share hers with family and friends.
Mary Jeanne Greene, age 76, passed away quietly at Peppi’s House on November 23, 2020 with family at her side. She was born June 7, 1944 in Pratt, Kansas to Patrick and Marcella Valverde who provided a loving and Christian home to her and her older sister, Patty and younger brothers, Larry and James. There was never a feeling of want growing up. Shortly before her nineteenth birthday, she married Richard (Dick) Greene, her true love and best friend, that would last for over 57 years here, and will go on eternally. Leaving the safety of Kansas, they moved to Chicago, Illinois, where they started their family with the birth of their daughter, Kristin and then the birth of their son, Michael. Mary created a safe and loving home where she made every day special and birthdays and holidays magical. They soon returned to Wichita, Kansas where many years were spent close to Mary’s parents, siblings and their families. A business opportunity brought Mary and her family of four to Tucson, Arizona in 1980. Mary fell in love immediately with the beauty of the southwest and it was here that she again created a warm and loving home that would welcome her grandchildren Bradley, Madeline and Jack.
While continuing to work with Dick in the Financial Services industry, Mary restarted her volunteer work by joining the Junior League of Tucson and later became their President in 1992-1993. She was introduced to St. Luke’s Home and served generously for many years becoming the only person to become President of their three entities (Saint Luke’s in the Desert, Inc. 1989-91, Saint Luke’s Home, Inc. 1989-91 and Saint Luke’s Board of Visitors 2000-01). In addition, Mary served as Chairman of the 1997 and 2019 100th Anniversary Baile De Las Flores. Over the past forty years Mary served in numerous volunteer capacities where she brought her abilities for organization, creativity, team building, setting goals and objectives, fundraising, working with policies and procedures, writing, an eye for detail and mentoring others. Mary loved being a part of her volunteer groups and treasured the many friendships that came from that.
Mary is survived by her best friend and loving husband, Richard W Greene, her two children Kristin (Andrew) Wellik and Michael (Kimberly) Greene, her three grandchildren Bradley (Leanna) Wellik, Madeline Greene and Jack Greene, her two younger brothers Larry (Sue) Valverde and James Valverde; her three nephews Robert (Eileen) Eilert and family, David (Kristoffer) Kennelly, and Douglas (Tiffany) Eilert and family; her three nieces Monica Valverde, Rebecca Yanish, Jennifer Valverde and families. Mary is predeceased by her parents Patrick and Marcella Valverde and older sister Patricia Eilert.
