Erna was born in Fleak, No. Dakota 16 Sept. 1916 to William Baier and Elizabeth Hochhalter Baier, the middle child of 3 children of whom she was the last surviving child.
18 Sept., 1937 she married Otto Tietz in Missoula, MT where they lived and raised their 3 children for the duration of their 33 year marriage.
5 May, 1974 she married Richard Madsen, Sr. in Spokane, WA. They traveled the U.S. with Dick’s job, settling in Bothell, WA. for 25 years until the death of Dick in 2003. She relocated to Tucson, AZ in May, 2015 where she passed on 27 Sept. 2015. She loved the warm weather, beautiful mountains & rainbows.
Erna was a graduate nurse, 13 yr. Sunday School teacher, master cookie, pie and bread-baker, excellent horsewoman, amazing seamstress, dance instructor, talented avid gardener and organ and accordion player.
Her Tietz family include her 3 children: Sons: Gene & Angie, Keizer, OR; Arlyn & Carole, Spokane, WA. and daughter Bev Wood Back & Ken Back, Tucson, AZ.
7 grandchildren: Troy Wood, Olympia, WA; Elisabeth Wood, Olympia, WA; Holly Wood Bowerman, Tucson, AZ; Mark Tietz, Rowlette, TX; Theresa Tietz Markham, Albany, OR; Justin Tietz, Meridian, ID; Renee Tietz Price, Missoula, MT. / 10 great-grandchildren: Adam, Ted, Crys, Daniel, Jessica, Sarah, Alexander, Kayla, Carter, Madison, and one great-great-grandson, Alex + nieces and nephews.
Her Madsen family include 4 children: Dick Jr. & Oma, Poulsbo, WA; Tom Madsen & Faith, St. Helens, MI; Sister Annette Madsen, Whitehorn, CA. and Patricia Madsen Ales, deceased, MO.
6 grandchildren: Jennifer Madsen Bade, Washington, MO; Tom Madsen Jr., St. Helens, MI; Angela Madsen Rose, St. Helens, MI; Chris Ales, Davenport, IA; Scott Ales, Eustis, FL; Carrie Ales Ummel, Scottsdale, AZ. / 8 great grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
We celebrated mom’s 99th birthday on 18 September with sunshine, balloons, presents and cake! She had a wonderful time. May God give us the grace to celebrate her time with us and her Homecoming.
