Sam Hoyte Blackwell, Jr., age 92, passed away on January 8, 2013, after a brief illness. He was born on June 6, 1920, in Chapel Hill, TN, the son of Samuel Hoyte Blackwell and Zella Marie Burks. He grew up in Columbus, GA, and graduated from Industrial (Jordan) High School.
Following graduation, he enrolled at Georgia Tech on a basketball scholarship. Because of WWII, he left Georgia Tech to join the U.S. Naval Air Corps. During his service in the Navy, he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. With the conclusion of the war in 1945, his squadron was decommissioned and he returned to Atlanta and received his degree from Georgia Tech.
He married Elizabeth Sue Moore on July 10, 1948, in Columbus. Hoyte was employed by the Georgia Department of Labor in Columbus, subsequently being transferred to Atlanta in 1961. He retired from the U.S. Department of Labor.
Hoyte was predeceased in death by his beloved wife, Bette, and his brother Charles W. Blackwell.
Hoyte is survived by daughters Betty Warner, Buford, GA, and Janet and Bill Rocker, Johns Creek, GA. Grandchildren Tiffany and Jason Moore, Hoschton, GA; Mallory Warner, Kennesaw, GA; Beth Rocker, Johns Creek, GA; Andy and Anna Rocker, Atlanta, GA; great-granddaughter, Emily Moore, Hoschton, GA; step-grandchildren David Rocker, Atlanta, GA, Lyn and Steve Pharris, Columbus, GA; son-in-law, Lee Sechler, Reno, NV; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 3150 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker, GA, on January 19th beginning at 9:00am with funeral at 10:30 am. Interment, with full military honors, will be at Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Road, Columbus, GA, on January 19th at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial offerings to Alzheimer’s research.
