Marion E. (Cal) Callaway, Battalion Chief (Ret.), Atlanta Fire Department, passed away peacefully at his home in Lawrenceville, GA, on Sunday, March 22, 2015, after an extended illness. Marion was born on December 13, 1925, in Atlanta, GA. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and the Korean conflict. He joined the Atlanta Fire Department in 1950, and retired in 1980 as a Battalion Chief. Marion loved the outdoors: he was an avid gardener, golfer, fisherman, and camper. He loved baseball and played AAA baseball for the Chicago White Sox in Thibodaux, LA. Marion was a very caring and compassionate man who will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, his son, Richard, three brothers and a sister. He is survived by his daughter, Janice Vernon, and spouse, Andrew; his son, James Callaway; a daughter-in-law (Richard’s widow), Leslie Callaway; grandchildren, David, Benjamin, and Anna Vernon, Jessica Hansard, Ryan Dyer, Sarah Callaway, and Andy Russell; great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Lou Hambrick, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the Lawrenceville Road United Methodist Church, 3142 Lawrenceville Hwy., Tucker, GA, on Friday, March 27, 2015, at 2 p.m. Visitation will be on Thursday, March 26, 2015, from 6-8 p.m. at. Floral Hills Funeral Home, 3156 Lawrenceville Hwy, Tucker, GA. In lieu of flowers, Marion’s wishes were that those who desire to honor him make a contribution in memoriam to St. Judes’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
