Jerry L. Chappell was born on January 26, 1942, in Newport, Madison County, Ohio. He passed away at the age of 82 on April 20, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Christine (Smith) Chappell. They were blessed with a daughter, Julie L. (Michael) Deaton and one grandson, James Deaton. Jerry served in the US Navy as a Yeoman Class A and was stationed in Washington, D.C.
He was raised in Springfield, Ohio, by his much-loved adoptive parents, Willis B. and Clara (Reiger) Chappell. He had one brother: the late Jean C. (Laura) Chappell, one nephew, David (deceased), and two nieces, Susan and Connie.
A brother-in-law, Wayne Smith, predeceased him. Wayne and his wife, Ethel (Smith) Cartwright had two sons: Brian (Christina) Smith and Jeff (Janelle) Smith. The union of Jeff and Janelle gave Jerry two great-nieces, Lily and Olivia.
Jerry’s mother was Anna Bell (Temple) Miller. He had two half-sisters: the late Barbara (Jim) Chess and Dorothy Lueloff. Barbara’s children are Kendra (Kurt) McClung, Kyle (Kristy) Chess, and the late Lorena (Chris) Campbell. Other great-nieces and a great-nephew are Mikala McClung; Erin, Becca, and Lauren Chess; Shelby Campbell, and Matt Lueloff.
Jerry was a quiet man who loved his family deeply. He enjoyed playing box games with his grandson James. Jerry and Christine challenged each other with Scrabble every evening. When Scrabble didn’t quite go his way, he was known to be a poor loser.
He took great pride in his yardwork and truly immersed himself in Ancestry research. He couldn’t have been more delighted when this passion rubbed off on Julie and Michael. Of all the places he and Christine traveled, his favorite destination was the western United States.
