Phyllis Marie Sampson

Phyllis M. Sampson passed away peacefully August 18, 2013, at home, surrounded by her family.

Phyllis was a life long resident of Traverse City. She was born in Traverse City on May 20, 1929, to Richard and Hazel (Olman) Witkop. She graduated from the Traverse City schools in 1947. On August 6, 1950, Phyllis married Donald D. Sampson, and they were married for 63 years. Phyllis had three children, Rebecca, Charles and Deborah.

Phyllis lived in the Traverse City area for her entire life. She worked in the family business with her husband and children for over thirty years. Phyllis was involved with many activities, organizations and groups throughout her lifetime. She enthusiastically participated in the Eastside Girls club for over fifty years.

Phyllis was a “people person.” She was cheerful, optimistic and enjoyed robust health throughout her lifetime. As a young girl, she excelled at dancing and music and she performed at dance recitals for a number of years. Phyllis remained physically active. The family produced maple syrup for fifteen years, and Phyllis participated in this endeavor also. She enjoyed socializing, working, gardening and birdwatching. She was proud of her home and flowers. Phyllis and her husband Don travelled at every opportunity. They especially enjoyed the Canadian wilderness and went to Canada on vacation for decades.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Donald, her daughters Rebecca and Deborah, her granddaughter Shannon Huey, her great-granddaughter Tatianna Smith, her sister Selma Weese, her sister-in-law Patricia Maxwell, a niece, two nephews, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Hazel Witkop, her brother Richard Witkop, and her son Charles.

At Phyllis’s request, there is no service planned.
