It is with great sadness that the family of Ruth Malloy (nee Rolleston) passed away Sunday March 5, 2023 peacefully at the age of 94. She was brought into this life on September 16, 1928 at Michigan, U.S.A. and is predeceased by her loving husband, Edward De Alva Malloy, who was her best friend for 63 years. She will be sadly missed by her 8 children Ruth (David) of Woodstock, ON; Edward of Philadelphia, U.S.A, Margaret (Doug) of Pickering, ON; Philip of Toronto, ON; Darcy (Evita) of Oshawa, ON; Tracy of Pickering ON; Helen of Toronto, ON; Kimberley (Graham) of Lindsay, ON and her eight grandchildren Hannah, Edward, Lilly, Michael (Darcy and Evita); John and Joseph (Kimberley and Graham); Lynn and Ryan (Margaret and Doug), and four great grandchildren Tessa, Clara, Leah, and Declan.
As an infant Ruth's family lived in Cuba, while her father worked as a researcher and environmental chemist, and later lived in Essoquibe, British Guiana and Christianburg, Demerara, British Guiana. Her family eventually moved back to the U.S.A. entering via Ellis Island, N.Y. They settled in Pascagoula, Mississippi, then later moving to Glens Falls, New York where Ruth had a happy childhood (known affectionately by her mother as "Ruthella" with her parents and two brothers Jack (Ruth) and Philip (Jean). Her family were active members of the Episcopal Church of the Messiah, where she enjoyed singing in the church choir, the Adirondack Mountain Club, and many community groups.
She excelled academically from a very young age and was a life-long learner. She earned an academic scholarship and attended Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., McGill University, Montreal and later attended the University of Toronto where she studied and achieved a Bachelor of Science Honours degree and a Master of Psychology degree.
While her children were of school age, Ruth was president of the Earl Haig Public School Home and School Association and ran for Home and School Trustee. She was a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution, Church of the Resurrection, Toronto, Friends of Schizophrenics, Toronto branch, and The University of Toronto Alumni Association. Ruth firmly believed in the importance of education and generously financed her children and grandchildren's college and university tuition because she loathed the idea that student loan debt would "hang over their heads" and prohibit learning and self development. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed history, writing, researching genealogy, playing scrabble and the piano. She enjoyed her many travel trips, cruises and road trips across Canada and the U.S. as well as holidays to Florida, Hawaii and Europe. She loved the outdoors, especially mountain climbing in the Adirondack Mountains, where her family vacationed every summer and she reunited with family, childhood friends, many "Kendall" cousins and "old neighbors".
She was very proud of her Master's thesis where she wrote extensively on the subject of Mental Health and schizophrenia. One of her proudest moments was receiving the "Shedding Light Award" which was presented by Lincoln Alexander, former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, for her work in promoting a more clear understanding of and causes of mental illness and its treatment. She used her knowledge and expertise as a volunteer for the Toronto branch of the "Friends of Schizophrenics" and spoke on their behalf at mental health conferences in Ontario and out of province engagements and took part in fundraising. In 1995 Ruth founded "Schizophrenia Awareness Month" to promote support for individuals living with schizophrenia, their families and with those they come in contact.
She worked tirelessly for many years as a teacher of literacy and basic skills at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, (CAMH) Toronto and devoted much of her retirement to providing support to individuals living with schizophrenia and their families.
Many thanks to the devoted staff at True Davidson Acres Long-Term Care Home for their compassion, kindness and tireless care.
