Sadly missed by family and friends, Mary was a glowing example of Love, Light, and Helpfulness. She showed a fighting spirit right to the end of her 99 years of life. Mary was born in Birmingham, England on October 13, 1924. She was a sporty and creative girl, captaining her school netball team as well as dancing in creative dance, acrobatics, ballet, tap, and traditional national dances. Her early work included employment in a fabric shop and delivering milk with a prototype of an electric vehicle. As a young woman she joined the British war effort as a Wren (WRNS – Women’s Royal Naval Service), July 1942, age 17yrs 9months. She was based in Largs, northern Scotland for much of the time performing Steward Duties and in the Catering Service for resident Officers. The silver service skills she acquired here served her well in later years in catering for Town Hall, and Masonic functions in her home town of Sutton Coldfield. Having moved to the Midlands area of Chasetown, in 1961, she opened her own business, catering for weddings. During the war years she met her future husband Harry at an armed forces dance in Liverpool (his home town). They were both natural dancers, and swiftly the romance took off. Though Harry was stationed in Mumbai and Kolkota, India, for much of the war, in the early stages, he too was stationed in Scotland and they were able to meet up at times. Married on December 15, 1945, Mary gave birth to David in 1949, and Robert in 1957, and relished the family life in middle England. A big move to Canada ensued in 1969. After one year in Montreal, the family set up home initially on Birchmount Avenue and later at Philip Avenue, near Kingston Road, Scarborough. Mary continued working as a caterer at The Embers, and in office work for the Canadian Cancer Society. Mary is predeceased by her parents, Margaret and Leonard and siblings Vera, John, Jean, Peter. She leaves son David and daughter-in-law Viv, and son Robert, daughter-in-law Mavis, and grandsons Jordan and Mark.
