Lucia Ida Rizzi

Our sweet beautiful loving mother passed away at the age of 93 at home with her family by her side, July 3rd 2023 in Toronto, Canada. We are certain that our Dad (Lorenzo) was waiting for her as the Angel Gabriel opened up the gates to heaven.

She was born in a beautiful mountain village called Maroggia in northern Italy into a family of 15 siblings (final count). Our mother started her adventures at the young age of 12, going off to the picturesque city of Como on the south shore of Lake Como, to be the Au Pair for a family in the silk industry with 8 children. On Sundays, she would go off to the Oratory where she would later meet her best friend, Adalgisa.

Adalgisa had a brother that had just left for Canada in 1953, she would write to him often. One letter included a picture of herself with her best friend (Lucia). We call that the “love at first sight picture”. Lorenzo requested that her girlfriend write to him in Canada. This was the beginning of their beautiful love story. Lucia and Lorenzo wrote to each other for over two years until he proposed having never met in person. Her father would not allow her to leave for Canada without being married, therefore they were married by proxy on May 5th, 1956, he in Canada and she in Italy, with his older brother, Giacomo, as his stand in.

Our mother then went to Gemona del Friuli (our dad’s hometown) to meet the in-laws, all before meeting her new husband. She then knew that she had made the right decision as she was received lovingly with open arms.

In late December of 1956, she left for Canada from the port of Genoa on the SS Conte Biancamano. Her youngest sister asked her “are you certain you want to go ahead with this?” and she was confident that she was leaving Italy for her destiny.

After 10 days by boat and 2 days by train she arrived at Toronto’s Union Station. My father was once asked, with all the people at Union Station, how were you ever able to pick her out, he replied, she was the most beautiful woman there! And so, their life together began.

In 1958 they welcomed their daughter Maria into their lives and in 1963 they welcomed their son Sandro. The family grew as their children gave them grandchildren, Stefano 1985, Rosanna 1989, Massimiliano 1995. She lost the love of her life and companion in 2017, but soon after was blessed with three great grandchildren, Cecilia, Giulia and Luca, which knew her as “Nonnina”.

She is survived by her children Maria (George), Sandro (Yasmin), Her grandchildren Stefano (Melissa), Rosanna (Daniel) Massimiliano (Shanelle), her great grandchildren Cecilia, Giulia and Luca. Her sister Anna and her sisters in law Adalgisa Dora and Anna. As well as many nieces and nephews in Italy, Argentina, Switzerland and Canada.

Our Mom had a way of making everyone she touched feel loved and was reciprocated by those who knew her. She will be forever treasured.

La nostra dolce e bellissima e amorevole mamma è morta all'età di 93 anni a casa con la sua famiglia al suo fianco, il 3 luglio 2023 a Toronto, in Canada. Siamo certi che nostro padre (Lorenzo) la stava aspettando mentre l'angelo Gabriele apriva le porte del paradiso.

È nata in un bellissimo paese di montagna chiamato Maroggia nel nord Italia in una famiglia di 15 fratelli (conteggio finale). Nostra mamma ha iniziato le sue avventure alla giovane età di 12 anni, andando nella pittoresca città di Como, sulla sponda meridionale del Lago di Como, per essere la ragazza alla pari di una famiglia nel settore della seta con 8 figli. La domenica si recava all'Oratorio dove poi avrebbe incontrato la sua migliore amica, Adalgisa.

Adalgisa aveva un fratello appena partito per il Canada nel 1953, gli scriveva spesso. Una lettera includeva una foto di se stessa con la sua migliore amica (Lucia). La chiamiamo “l'immagine dell'amore a prima vista”. Lorenzo ha chiesto se la sua amica gli potesse scrivere in Canada. Questo fu l'inizio della loro bellissima storia d'amore. Lucia e Lorenzo si sono scritti per oltre due anni fino a quando lui le ha chiesto di sposarlo, anche se non si erano mai incontrati di persona. Suo padre non le permise di partire per il Canada senza sposarsi, quindi si sposarono per procura il 5 maggio 1956, lui in Canada e lei in Italia, con il fratello maggiore, Giacomo, come sostituto.

Nostra mamma è poi andata a Gemona del Friuli (città natale di nostro padre) per incontrare i suoceri, il tutto prima di incontrare il suo nuovo marito. Ha poi capito di aver preso la decisione giusta perché è stata accolta amorevolmente a braccia aperte.

Alla fine di dicembre del 1956 partì per il Canada dal porto di Genova sulla SS Conte Biancamano. La sorella minore le ha chiesto “sei sicura di voler andare avanti?” ed era sicura di lasciare l'Italia per il suo destino.

Dopo 10 giorni di nave e 2 giorni di treno è arrivata alla Union Station di Toronto. Una volta a mio padre è stato chiesto, con tutte le persone alla Union Station, come hai mai potuto sceglierla, lui ha risposto, Era la donna più bella lì! E così è iniziata la loro vita insieme.

Nel 1958 accolgono nella loro vita la figlia Maria e nel 1963 accolgono il figlio Sandro. La famiglia è cresciuta man mano che i figli hanno dato loro dei nipoti, Stefano 1985, Rosanna 1989, Massimiliano 1995. Ha perso l'amore della sua vita e compagno nel 2017, ma poco dopo è stata benedetta con tre pronipoti, Cecilia, Giulia e Luca, che l'hanno conosciuta come “Nonnina”.

Le sopravvivono i figli Maria (George), Sandro (Yasmin), i nipoti Stefano (Melissa), Rosanna (Daniel) Massimiliano (Shanelle), i pronipoti Cecilia, Julia e Luca. Sua sorella Anna e le cognate Adalgisa Dora e Anna. Oltre a tanti nipoti in Italia, Argentina, Svizzera e Canada.

La nostra mamma aveva un modo di far sentire amati tutti quelli che toccava ed era ricambiata da chi la conosceva. Il suo ricordo rimarrà un tesoro per sempre.
