Hello Lottie,
This is not timely I realize; June 7,2021 as I am only reading this today after finding an old Outdoor magazine at home. Thought I would  Google John.
I am 60, but remember my Dad ( Bob Bateman) bringing John to our home  in Lakefield north of Peterborough when I was a kid. They met somehow, in Toronto when my Dad was younger, fishing! My Dad  passed in 2007 at the age of 85, Mom ( Irene) passed the year before.
Dad and John fished as I grew up.
One amazing day he brought his new girlfriend Lottie to visit. They got married later. Then brought “Johnny” to visit. I did not meet Kelly.
My Dad thought very highly of John who I remember being so kind and gentle and who had a great smile.  Lottie was the same and we enjoyed their visits.
My heartfelt condolences 💐 to you Lottie and Johnny and Kelly!

Although I had read his columns religiously for many years, I first met John as a student when he taught a steehead fishing course at Seneca College in the early 1980's. That course came with a trip to the Saugeen River. We stayed in touch and he encouraged my freelance writing activities even though I was way more bass focused then he.  He also encouraged my to pursue my idea to teach a bass fishing course - and thanks to ongoing promotion in his Sun newspaper column, I taught that for 25 years at various campuses of Seneca,Georgian and Fleming College. Later I would write the occasional piece for OOD where John was editor. As part of my day job with MNR, I pushed hard internally to try and have John become a founding member of the Lake Simcoe Fisheries Stakeholder Committee - and he happily did; representing the outdoor media on that group until about 2015 a couple of years after his retirement from OOD. John's contributions were very based on a sound understanding of the science we presented mixed with a first hand practical knowledge of the fishery. He gave freely of his time and came up with our watershed logo that we still use today.  Over these many years I have greatly admired my friend John Kerr and the outdoor community in Ontario will surely miss him.

John was a great friend of my son Luigi De Rose who besides working as a teacher he also is the Bass Editor for Ontario Out of Doors.My son had great admiration for John and many a time they chatted on the phone.Luigi started writing when he was twenty years old and John encouraged him over the years.
My deepest sympathy to the family.
My prayers are with all of you at this sad time.

Thank you to everyone who has left a comment sharing condolences, or a memory of my dad. It is heartwarming to see how many people whose lives he made an impact on. He fought the cancer to the very end. He was so loved by his family and we all miss him terribly. But we are so proud of him and his accomplishments. We hope to see many of you at his Celebration of Life later this year. 

I crossed paths with John several times at Duffins Creek, the Toronto Sportsmens Show, and Pickering Harbour. I didn't read everything he wrote, but darn near, from newspaper articles to Ontario Out of Doors. His willingness to share his knowledge and experience was truly appreciated. My sincere condolences to John's family.

I'll miss fishing with my buddy John - He truly was an exceptional angler who will be missed by many.
