April 9, 1929- November 27, 2022
Jim passed away peacefully with his family by his side, on Nov. 27th, 2022 at the age of 93. He leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Cathy Mahoney (Hoare), and three children: Richard (Kathy), James (Lucia), and Margaret Mahoney. Grandpa Jim is fondly remembered by his grandchildren: Tara, Kieran, Aidan, Alex, Christopher, and Kyle Mahoney. He is predeceased by his parents Richard and Vina Mahoney (McDermott) and sisters Sheila Low and Ann Marie St. Denis.
After growing up on the farm in Uptergrove, Ont., Jim attended St. Michael's College at the University of Toronto. He then obtained his law degree from Osgoode Hall. He practiced law in Toronto, first in private practice and then into government service including many years until retirement as in-house counsel to the LCBO and LLBO. Jim loved the poetry of Yeats, Eliot and of his cousin Billy Collins. He had a dry sense of humour and quick wit. Despite certain struggles, Jim was happiest in his ‘larger than life’ garden at Lake Simcoe where he spent many hours.
Many thanks to the dedicated doctors and nurses at North York General Hospital, who cared for him in his final days.
