ANGUS, Donald Gordon, 84, died in Toronto on Dec. 13, 2022. Born in Halifax on Nov. 27, 1938, he was the youngest of four children of the late Daniel Burton Angus and Ethelyn (Bezanson) Angus. He attended public schools in Rockingham, then his family moved to Pictou and he graduated from Pictou Academy, where his father was a teacher and later principal. Donald attended Acadia University, majoring in English, and earned a diploma in education from Dalhousie University.
Don launched his career in journalism at the Athenaeum, the Acadia University student newspaper, where he was editor-in-chief for the 1958-59 school year. After a brief stint as a schoolteacher, Don joined Canadian Press in Halifax. He thrived at CP, earning postings to New York and Toronto. He was particularly proud of his role coordinating the technical side of CP preparations for coverage of the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, working closely with colleagues from Associated Press in New York to facilitate rapid transmission of event results around the world.
Don then moved into management and sales positions, working as a salesperson in Toronto for the Reuters news wire. After Reuters, Don moved into freelance writing and editing. He was editor of Canadian Cinematographer, honored with the Canadian Society of Cinematographers’ President’s Award in 2011.
Don maintained a lifelong love of hockey and baseball, first in his youth as a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies, then the Toronto Blue Jays. He played hockey in weekly pickup games with friends for years, and was an avid and talented softball player. He also loved the theater, attending many shows at the Stratford Festival in particular, and wrote several plays that were produced around Toronto.
Donald is survived by his wife Linda Redford; brother Murray Angus (Joan), Dartmouth, N.S.; daughters Holly Angus, Fort Frances, Ont. and Heather Angus-Lee, Harley, Ont. and son-in-law Doug Angus-Lee; grandchildren Cameron Bower, Ottawa; Colleen Angus-Yamada, New York; Owen Angus-Yamada, Toronto; Damian Angus, Hamilton, Ont.
