It is with great sadness that we share the news that Dawn Rye has succumbed to her condition and passed away on Sunday June 29. Born Dawn Windatt in Beaverton, Ontario in 1935, she was the eldest in a large farming family. She studied at Queens University and graduated with a B.A. in History and English in 1957. At Queens she met Robert Rye and was married in 1960. She raised two children , Lyla and Ian, and gave them a childhood rich in education, reading, art and despite her own reservations; a love of the water and the outdoors. She practiced drawing and painting before using her talents to design three lakeside properties in Muskoka. She loved a good puzzle, travel, and read novels voraciously. She instilled in her children a passion for the arts, education and social values. She lived to enjoy her 4 grandchildren; Lena, Oliver, Jasper and Mircea. Dawn was pre-deceased by Robert in 2013.
Dawn died in the company of her loving family at North York General Hospital. Since being diagnosed with leukemia in March she lived to the fullest at home, enjoying visits with family, play with her grandkids and outings around the province. Donations can be made in her memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. She requested that in the place of a funeral, a book be printed in her memory. She will be greatly missed.
