Such sad news to learn of David’s passing. He was a great friend, bon vivant, and deep soul. So sorry for his loss.

I’m so sorry to have just learned  so late of David’s passing. He was a lovely person, a dedicated trade unionist, a joy to work with. It is with profound sadness and shock that I learned of David’s passing. I made David’s acquaintance  on Actra Council many years ago and we shared many of the same ideals and interests. The love of family and that of being an actor. David was caring ,devoted, and honest to a fault. My condolences to the family. 
I will miss you friend, till the next time. 

David and I worked together on council at ACTRA and, though we lived in different cities, it was always reassuring to see his familiar, friendly face and bask in his warmth and wit whenever we would gather as a National group. I am profoundly saddened to hear of his passing. My sincere condolences to his family and many friends.


David was simply a good man. A kind heart. He lived up the street from me when I first moved to Toronto and we both lived on St George Street.  David was one of my first actor friends in Toronto and it was always such fun to act with him and rehearse scenes. I am so shocked and saddened that he has left us suddenly. Sending my deepest condolences to his entire family. May you go gently through these tender times. With love, Collette.

I was so sorry to hear the news about David. Sending heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. David was a stand-up guy. Always fair and honest in difficult situations. I had great respect for his volunteer spirit and dedication. He will be missed.

I’m very sorry to hear this news. I enjoyed my interactions with David both as an Equity member and during the time he was involved with Equity Showcase. I want to offer my sincerest condolences to his family and close friends on their loss.

I am shocked and deeply saddened to learn that David passed. We spent a lot of time together in ACTRA Council and committee meetings, and in collective bargaining negotiations. David was smart, bold, entertaining, thoughtful and compassionate; always concerned about the best interest of the members. You are missed. Sleep in peace, David. 

David stood beside me as my best man 30 years ago. We were fast friends. I remember him in high school as being one of the brightest people I had the honour of being in the company of. His passion and open hearted nature were like a special kind of gravity that kept us close for 35 years. We spoke often and for hours while Covid was taking its toll. Our last conversation moved us swiftly though time as we reminded each other of things that were lost in the back woods of our minds. We laughed so hard at ourselves that the tears began to flow. In retrospect, it feels like we were saying good-bye. 

I will always hold him close and in the highest regard as one of the most genuine, kind and honourable men who added a special grace to my life. 

Language can’t begin to describe the essence of the emptiness when he passed. 

Mr and Mrs MacNiven, I am so truly sorry that you have lost your son and I thank you so much for the gift that he was to all of us who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.

In our playing  together in Kate Ashby’s improv workshops, he was always the perfect straight man to my ridiculous clown. Love him so much, miss him even more.

He was a shepherd.
I feel a little bit lost without him now.

Heartfelt condolences to the Macniven family!  No one can really prepare for such a loss. I did not know David but did know his father and I cannot imagine how Mr and Mrs Macniven are feeling!!


Greg  and I  got to know David from my work on Actra Council.  He was perceptive, gracious and kind.
We are so sorry for your loss.

I am so very sorry for you loss. I had the great privilege of doing Improv with David every Monday night for years and performing with him onstage. He was always a generous performer and person. I can't tell you how many times he made me laugh out loud. I am so very sorry that he left us too soon. 

David and I sat  on the board of ACTRA Toronto for many years. Quick with a quip he worked tirelessly for his peers. I am saddened that I let too much time slip by and now all that’s left to say is sweet farewell 

David was one of the first people I met when I started to attend the monthly ACTRA council meetings as the representative of the ACTRA Apprentice caucus.  Maybe, as we were both ex-pat Brits, we shared a common background.

I was the "new boy" at these meetings and David was one of the people there who made me feel welcome, and for that I was appreciative.

It is distressing that David died so young.

Sending my deepest condolences to David’s family. It’s heartbreaking to lose him so suddenly.

It’s been a good 30+ years since we were at Studio. I wanted to share some fond memories from back then. 

That baritone voice meant for Shakespeare or his own show on CBC. When we worked on sonnets in voice class. It was beautiful the way he spoke. It made our Voice Teacher, Dale teary. His intellect, his rapier wit. He was a Bon Mot, a raconteur, a rake, a story teller, a poet. 
Acting was an about face. He was a natural. You could see it when he played Jaques in “As you
Like it”. He had that gravitas and wisdom far beyond his years. Jacques’s monologue is well known and considered by us in the theatre world as “purple”. It’s been done so often in auditions but also by some of the greatest actors. Every night he went deeper into the words. No one else in our class could have played that part. It was unforgettable. Acting meant so much to him. It became his calling. It connected all of us. 
So goodbye my friend. Sleep sweet. 

I met David in Vancouver many many years ago at a writing for actors group and quickly became aware of his huge talent. His work has stayed with me all this time. It was a short film script about a little boy and his first school experience. It was so full of understanding of the vulnerability of us as children and people. Every time I saw or spoke or texted with David his humanity and depth comforted me. I will miss him. Really really miss him. 

Wishing David’s children Styx and Ivor, my friend Kathryn, and David’s family my condolences. May his memory always be a blessing.
