My father struggled with his drinking from a young age shortly after his mother died. But the past 13 years since my mother passed had been unbearably difficult for him. My dad had moments of happiness but he was barely above water most of the time. The depression and alcoholism consumed him. But even with his struggles, he maintained a strong relationship with my brother and I and his grandson, Jackson who he adored. He was still the concerned, caring, overprotected father we knew growing up. He never hung up the phone without telling me how much he loved me and Jackson and how much he missed us - even if we just saw him the day before. I'll miss those phone calls.

I love you, Papa. No more pain. You can rest now. 


My father and I were very close. We spoke on the phone A LOT and Jackson and I visited him quite often. He always had a funny story to tell me - which often led to him reminiscing of the past when my mom and him were dating. How good I was as a baby (expect that I cried a lot - but Jacqueline never did!). How Marcel was a little monkey when he was a kid and how so damn proud he is of him today. He'd give me cooking tips (he was an incredible cook) and I'd make him care packages of the food that him and my mom would make for us growing up. My dad was the dad who would take his kids to the park, teach them how to ride a bike, throw a baseball, fly a kite, catch a fish and cozy up on the sofa for an afternoon nap. He always picked out the very best of everything for my brother and I - Halloween costumes, bikes, rollerblades - we were never without. I have fond memories of working in the garden with my dad and listening to 70s Rock - The Doors, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin... My dad loved to read and could easily read 3-4 novels a week.  He loved watching documentaries about nature, crime and war. I can clearly picture my dad sitting on the sofa, in the house we grew up in, back propped up with pillows, legs stretched out - watching documentaries for hours on a Sunday afternoon. He loved them and loved telling us all about what he'd learned. He loved learning and understanding why things were the way they were. He thought deeply, loved deeply and perhaps that is why he struggled with his emotions so much. Why he missed my mom so much. Cont’d...

It is hard to believe that it was only less than a week before Tony's passing we had a phone conversation for over an hour and a half.  Time just flew as we laughed and shared memories from the past.  
One story that  stood out to both of us is when Vinces Mom was ill with cancer I gave up my job and we rented out our home and moved in with Mom, Dad, Tony and Mario in their home on Burnfield Ave in Toronto... I looked after Mom and the Family until Mom lost her battle with cancer and passed away....Vince and I remained with Dad and the two Brothers who were still living at home and going to school...Tony was in high school but when he was home he loved cooking with me....we both loved escargots so one day he went to the Portuguese village on College St and purchased some snails (escargots) still in their shells....I was out somewhere when he came home with them so he proceeded to go downstairs kitchen/family room and placed them in a bucket of cold water and left them on the kitchen counter.
Once I returned he could not wait to tell me what he purchased for us to cook for dinner.  Well outside of having the as an appetizer I had no idea how to make any other dishes with them.  Well if you knew Tony he already looked up a recipe to make a pasta dish with them....so I said to him chop, chop let's go get the and start dinner and I told him he was helping for sure....WELL once we got downstairs all of these snails were all over the counters, walls on the Fridge on the floor....Tony and I just looked at each other and laughed until our faces hurt...I told him even if we collect them I cannot eat them noway, nohow!!!.so I went to cook our dinner his job was to collect all of them and I said all of them and discard them in the outside garden....Both if us had such a good laugh during our call once again...I could go on about many stories we shared during our call before we said good bye and ended the conversation by telling each other that he loved me and that I loved him.

May all the past good memories you have shared bring you strength in the coming days and provide you resilience today and always. One of my favourite memories was coming over to your house, while dating your Uncle, your Dad would love to share his adventure stories with us and make us laugh. Another one was when he rode his bicycle to our house cause he wanted to visit with us. We will remember him and miss him forever
