I met Uncle Adam only once and I never forgot the experience. He left an indelible memory on me and my siblings. One of a friendly charm, wit and grace. I am Deborah Luptak. My Grandparents were Anton and Emily Luptak (nee Schnerch) who lived in Winnipeg. I believe that the year was 1966 or 67. My Father, Eugene Henry Luptak, was so happy to see him again and his Aunt Magdalen. I am sorry to hear about his passing and send my deepest condolences to the family albeit late. I will never forget the two of them.

Thank you for the wonderful  memories...especially at Musselman's Lake cottage. 

My fondest memory was coming home at 49 Carney Rd., going downstairs to find Uncle Adam and my dad (John Solomon) jammin' fiddling away. Doing what they enjoyed the most I'm sure. I think it was in the spring of 98'. 

What a special day it was to help Uncle Adam celebrate his 100th birthday. I personally enjoyed our quiet moment together as we ate cake and fruit together and sharing a few pix. Yes I remember Adam as he was tapping away his left hand on his chair. I remember just looking into his eyes and enjoying the moment. Ich liebe dich Uncle Adam, May You Rest In Peace, God Bless...

I was very saddened to hear the passing of Uncle Adam.  When I was a child I wanted to play the violin just like him.  Uncle Adam gave me a violin & I was signed up for lessons.  After 2yrs of lessons I came to realize I could never play the violin like Uncle Adam. My mom, dad, & siblings would agree. I did not inherit the Gottfried musical traits.  I remember as a child being at our family reunions in Camp Morton & the impromptu band would form.  It was an amazing experience.  I never knew spoons could make music.  Family is one of the most important things a person could have.  Memories live on forever.  Uncle Adam you were loved & you shared love with all of us.

Dear Carmen and Wendy and family. We never had the privilege of getting to know your father Carmen, but in some ways we felt we knew him. We have always enjoyed your stories about his humour and musical talents. From what you have told us there was obviously a lot of fun and at the Gottfried residence while you were growing up, and the legacy lives on.  Occasionally ordinary people will achieve greatness and it's easy to believe that your father was one of those special few. Our thoughts are with you at this time.

Feb 25/14 As you know, I can neither talk or write. My Brother Bob Reichert is doing this for me. Every Monday AM Bob and I visit by way of computer skyping. It was with great sadness that he told me of Uncle Adam's passing. Uncle Adam was my favorite of all my relatives. As you know my Dad (Joe) and Mom (Josey) both had about a dozen siblings each.
Bob asked me what I remember of Uncle Adam because it was a long time ago. I remember he was kind, strong and loving of people and life. I know how much it initially hurts to lose loved ones because we lost Mom and Dad. Although I am sad that Uncle Adam has passed away he is now in a better place alongside the person he loved the most, Aunt Madge. I remember our family holiday to Toronto in 1965 staying at the house, visiting Gramma, Uncle Adam and Aunt Madge and all the cousins. Everyone was so fun-loving and Uncle Adam was always the trickster having Mom and Aunt Madge in stitches so much and laughing til they cried. Uncle Adam always spent so much time holding my hand and talking to me.
Many times when Uncle Adam came to Winnipeg he always visited us on Machray Avenue. He played the violin for me and talked to me and always held my hand. Uncle Adam was the dearest and sweetest man that I have ever known. I believe that he lived a long, fruitful and happy life. I know he is in Heaven with God now having rejoined his life partner, Aunt Madge. Thank you Uncle Adam for just being you...with love from your niece,

Puppup has gone to a better place. He lived to an incredible age of 101 years old. I had a chance to visit him when I was home last June.  While I visited, he was sleeping for most of the time but something that was quite spectacular was that he was tapping his hand on his leg in a rhythm like he would do when listening to or playing music to keep count of the beat.  This sums up a lot about Puppup's passions, he was happiest when there was music in the air.  I can only imagine he was joyfully playing one of his favourite songs in his dreams!

I am very blessed to have been able to spend as much time with Nana & Puppup as I did, many people do not get a chance to meet their Great-Grandparents, let alone have a relationship, and 20 years of fond memories with them.  Many of my memories come from spending Saturday afternoons visiting with Nana & Puppup.  I remember one of the first things Puppup would say to Josh and I when we arrived was "Have you got a girlfriend yet?" Or, as we got older and taller, he would ask, "How is the weather up there?"  Puppup had a great sense of humour and would constantly be joking around or "pulling your leg" with a great big smiley on his face.

After we were done with the formalities of greeting our grandparents, we would race to the music room and spend hours trying different instruments, and exploring new sounds.  The music room always had at least 10 violins hanging on a string across the left side of the room, and had countless cases with violins in them, on the ground below.  There was a dulcimer to the right of the violins, an electric organ sat across from the dulcimer, a banjo in one corner, a guitar in another, an accordion tucked under a chair, and countless other noisemakers scattered throughout the room, including spoons, harmonicas, and shakers.  I enjoyed playing with the dulcimer the most.  It was a unique instrument that I had never seen before and it was simple for a child to get a pleasant sound from.  To this day, whenever I hear the accordion, it brings me back to Puppups music room where he would play countless songs while we clapped along with spoons on our knees. 

Puppup was a man of many talents and skills, including being a carpenter, musician, violin-maker, instrument-repairman, gardener, inventor and, of course, comedian.  If he were here today looking back on his life, he would not be most proud of these outstanding accomplishments, but instead it would be of his beautiful family whose pictures were displayed with pride on his walls and throughout his home.  Even the picture of "Mr. Scarborough" in his bikini bottoms made it onto display in the back corner of the music room.  

I have learned a lot from Puppup, and I am happy to know that he has been reunited with Nana. I will always remember and cherish the time we spent together

I wish I could finally give you an answer to those two questions you asked me each time we met, from as early as I can remember:  “Are you still in school?” and “Are you married yet?” to which I could finally reply:  “No, I'm not in school”, and “marriage probably won't be too far off”. 
 "By golly!" he would say... "By Golly!"
 
I think that now it's our turn to say, “By golly!  What a life you lived!”  I knew you for only a quarter of it and, in that time, was blessed to get to share that huge love which you have for all of your family.   
 
Growing up, visits to your home were filled with fascination, a treasure trove of trinkets, instruments and keepsakes from a time so far before us that they took on an almost magical property...  and if we got into something we shouldn't have, out came the belt, and the magnificent cracking noise he could make with it! I don't think it ever got used, but it kept us on our toes!
 
I can only now, looking back, begin to appreciate what a truly magnificent man you were.  You had many talents, and the strength of an ox, but most importantly, you had love enough to share with all of your children, and their children, and their children!  
 
One day I'll have kids of my own and, “By Golly,” they will hear all about your truly remarkable life.  I love you Pup Pup.

We know that Adam was well loved and cared for. Joan and Richard, our dear friends, shared many stories that made us feel as if we knew him personally. Adam lived a full life, leaving behind a legacy well lived and to be treasured. We will be praying for all of you as you grieve your loss and celebrate his life.

May '83 Adam & Magdalen came into our lives when their grandson, Ted, married our daughter, Cheryl. When we visited, Adam & I talked of his past in Manitoba & our common interest in music. He gave me the blueprint for the 1st violin I constructed.  He'd already built several & told me how to make my own tools. Over the years,I've made 10 violins with much of the wood from Adam's basement shop.  The wood for the sides and neck of the violin I'm making now, is from his shop.Adam & I played music together every time we visited them. My wife and I consider ourselves fortunate to have known them both. We offer our condolences to the Gottfried family.

The last time we saw Uncle Adam in Winnipeg was in 2005. We always looked forward to his Manitoba visits, a periodic return to his roots.
It only took a short day's notice, and some 50 relatives gathered at the CanadInn for a buffet dinner, cherishing Uncle Adam's presence.
His siblings Rose, Lena and Margaret were there, as well as many of his nieces, nephews and their spouses. It was a most joyous time, when one after another stood up and shared precious memories. The evening ended with heartfelt hugs and kisses; as one would expect from Uncle Adam.

Last year, the extended family met again at the Norvilla Hotel in Winnipeg for lunch in celebration of Uncle Adam's 100th Birthday on February 26, 2013. 
Here we took turns in front of a video camera to extend our greetings, some in song, and forwarded a DVD to Uncle Adam and his family in Toronto.

Uncle Adam was a genuinely caring person. We will always treasure the memory of his hospitality, honesty and sincerity. He was a wonderful uncle.

We are so saddened to hear of Uncle Adam's passing. I have such wonderful memories from when I was little of going with my dad to Uncle Adam's house and listening to them play songs on  their instruments. Uncle Adam would give me little instruments to try to play as well. I remember his grape pop that he always made sure I had. I will miss you Uncle Adam. Ich Liebe dich. Carol and I want to express our deepest sympathy and to let you know that our thoughts and prays are with you.  We have fond memories of our wedding day and Adam's White Cadillac that he graciously loaned us to drive away from the church.  We still have pictures of us in that car.

He is now on his way to rejoin the love of his life Magdalen.

Peter and I were sad to hear of the passing of dear "Uncle" Adam. He and Magdalen were great friends of my parents, John and Frances. Adam's love of music along with John's was probably the beginning of many a house party. What a long and full life Uncle Adam has had.  And yes the memories of the Cadillac with the soup & pop dispenser.  Uncle Adam granted my wish that he would take me and my Dad to my wedding in that beautiful Caddie.  The violin collection was truly something to be proud of and he certainly was.  We now have a grandson Soren 5-1/2 yrs that plays the fiddle-the memories continue!

Uncle Adam lived a long and healthy life and enriched the lives of his family, relatives and friends.  He was a strong defender of his faith and family values and showed us how to live a good Christian life.  Uncle Adam worked hard at everything he did whether he was building a house or building a violin.
I enjoyed phoning him whenever I was in Toronto.  His values and the sound of his voice always made me feel like I was talking to my dad.

I always heard about my great-uncle Adam, who made violins. I thought about it a lot when my daughter began to take lessons. My Aunt Eleanor Schreyer told me that my own grandfather (John Schreyer) could play the fiddle really well... but never did I see him play in all the years I knew him. Maybe Uncle Adam and he played together, and I imagine how the music must have lifted everyone's spirits through the years. And to make violins, too! My two daughters have become talented dancers instead, but I believe that some of that Gottfried musical talent has rubbed off on them. So sad to hear of Uncle Adams passing.  He was always smiling and full of hugs any time I visited with my dad, Joe, Uncle Adams brother.  Dad lived with Uncle Adam and Auntie Madge for awhile after he came from the mines in Red Lake. He opened his home to dad without thinking twice when he already had a house full. That was the kind of person he was. 
To me Uncle Adam had the coolest violin collection. When he and dad started to play it was sooo much fun to listen to.  Of course I had to play the spoons :).  Another memory I have was Uncle Adams Cadillac.  Man that thing was cool! I especially liked the pop machine that was under the dash. You could push whatever button for the type of pop you wanted.  To this day when I see an old Cadillac I know right away if it's an Uncle Adam style Caddie. 
Uncle Adam you will always have a place in my heart as the smiling, talented, violin maker and collector that you where who enjoyed making others smile and tap their toes to your special music.  May you rest in piece Uncle Adam. You will be greatly missed.

Sad to hear of Uncle Adam's passing, yet easy to feel joy and be able to say "wow, what an awesome legacy he has been a part of and left behind".

When I moved to T.O. at the age of 21, my extended family really helped me and Uncle Adam was a big part of that.  I would visit him quite regularly.  He was a music man, and we would sometimes spend the day in his music room, playing, and appreciating instruments.  Aunt Magdalene would make lunch and then we'd go back in and play some more.  At the end of the day, he would say "ich liebe dich" and I didn't know what he was saying for the longest time.
