Mary P. Wong

Born in Robinsonville, Mississippi, she was the third of seven children born to Wing Gauy Pang and Siu Shee Pang. The family operated a general store in West Helena, Arkansas, where she worked during her high school and young adult years.

Mary married Pershing Wong, of Rosedale, Mississippi, in 1952.

She was fond of recounting her summer honeymoon, touring France and Italy. From humble origins, she and her husband, Pershing Wong, shared a dynamic and fulfilling life together.

Throughout her life, Mary thrived as an exemplary wife and mother. The family home was a place to rest and recharge, a welcome respite from the rigorous professional demands and international travel required of her husband. To her four children, she imparted her fierce determination to work diligently and to be productive.

Her first priority was the family. She was a devoted, resourceful companion to her husband, and ensured the orderly progression of each child through their college years. She kept in touch with her parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews. In due time, she welcomed significant others and spouses with an open heart. Generous, kind, and curious, she displayed a playful sense of humor and enjoyed a good piece of gossip.

Mary loved entertaining and all types of cooking; especially Chinese, Italian, and Southern cuisine. She enjoyed gardening and possessed a prodigious “green thumb”. She was particularly fond of geraniums, begonias, jade, and African violets, which adorned her residences, inside and out.

She collected miniatures and would comment on the delicacy and quality of workmanship that one might easily overlook. Mary had an abiding love for babies and toddlers; captivated by their tiny hands, long eyelashes, or little shoes. She was able to spend time with her grandchildren during their formative years and was proud of all of them.

Mary lovingly cared for husband Pershing during his twilight years, until he passed peacefully in their home.

She never feared change, and at age 90, moved in with her sister, who was also a widow. She was happiest during large family gatherings, and thoroughly enjoyed the celebration of her 95th birthday, attended by four generations.
