Joan M. Hallihan, 78, (nee Callaghan) of Toms River, formerly of Milltown passed away peacefully on June 28, 2015. Joan was born to the late Joseph and Jessie Callaghan on November 28, 1936 in Newton-Le-Willows, United Kingdom. Joan was predeceased by her husband Kenneth J. Hallihan in 1986. Surviving are her sons Stephen (Christine), Peter, Kenneth, and daughter Sheila (David) Howard. Doting grandmother (Yummies) of Marley, Maggy, Kyla, and K.C. Hallihan. Her four grandchildren were the sunshine of her life. Joan is also survived by her sister Betty Bentham, her brother Geoffrey Callaghan, and many nieces and nephews.
Joan worked for 30 years as a bookkeeper for Grand Union and was a member of UFCW Local 1262. Grand Union is where she made most of her lifelong friends. Joan had an extraordinary life. During her life, she survived air raids in the United Kingdom during WWII, she survived a shark attack at Seaside Heights, and she attended the Beatles first live television performance on the Ed Sullivan Show. However, her life's greatest joy came when she became a grandmother. Joan will be remembered for her sense of humor, her bravery, her beautiful heart, and her love of family and friends. Joan will be forever missed.
Visitation will be held Wednesday July 1 from 7pm to 9pm at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River. A funeral service will be offered at 10am on Thursday July 2, 2015 at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Ocean County Memorial Part at 1722 Silverton Road, Toms River.
