Jae Jeong was born on June 10, 1935 (recorded officially as December 30, 1935) to his parents Tae Seob Shim and Wha Son Kang, in Ye San, South Korea. After graduating from Methodist Theological Seminary in Korea, he took pastoral assignments in small rural area churches before he became a chaplain at Young Myung Mission School in Gong Ju, where he took the role of educator and spiritual guide to so many students for over 15 years there.
In 1984, the year that the Methodist Church was celebrating the centennial anniversary of mission in Korea, the Church decided that it was “goodwill and fitting” to send missionaries in return to the U.S. Jae Jeong was one of five who were chosen to come to the U.S. as the missionary.
Jae Jeong’s first appointment in the U.S. was in Junction City, KS, where he founded Junction City Korean United Methodist Church and ministered to Korean wives who married U.S. Soldiers and their families. Then, Jae Jeong was reappointed to the Southern New Jersey Korean United Methodist Church. He retired from pastorate vocation at Siloam Korean United Methodist Church in 2001 after twenty years of ministries in the U.S.
Jae Jeong was a solid rock, providing what was best for all of his family and a pillar to the churches that he served, giving all that he had. Most of all, Rev. Jae Jeong Shim was a faithful servant of his Lord, Jesus Christ. He had an undeterred faith in and love for God no matter what, even as he was going “through the valley of the shadow of death”!
Jae Jeong is survived by his wife–his lover, companion in ministry, friend, and “nurse”–of 58 years, Hyun Suk Shim; his beloved children, Seong Ae and Heui Kim of Tamarac, FL, Minae and Geunmo Chong of Sunrise, FL, and Hyun-Bo and Sunny Shim of Spring Lake Heights, NJ; and, five cherished grandchildren, Grace Lee of Houston, TX, Ebenezer Shim of Boston, MA, David Chong of Gainsville, FL, Emmanuel Shim of Chestnut Hill, MA, and Ezra Shim of New Brunswick, NJ.
"A Service of Death and Resurrection" will be held on Tuesday, December 27th at 11:00 a.m. at Harvey Memorial UMC (1120 Arnold Ave., Point Pleasant, NJ 08742).
Prior to the service, a viewing will be held between 10 and 11 a.m.
The committal service will be held privately in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at a later date.
