November 14, 2017 at Community Medical Center, Toms River. Born in
Taylor TX, she attended Prairie View University in Prairie View TX.
Deborah was a true army wife who traveled the world with her husband and
their family to locations such as Japan, California, Germany and
Brooklyn, NY. before moving to Toms River 40 years ago. When her
children were younger she was extremely active in all of their
activities. She also devoted a great deal of time as a volunteer for the
Red Cross and was also active in veteran hospitals, assisting veterans
with writing letters to their loved ones. Deborah was a member of the
First Baptist Church of Toms River.
Deborah was predeceased by her husband Lt Col. James W. Simmons, Sr. and
her three brothers, Wellington Hancock, Winfred Hancock and Nathaniel
Hancock. She is survived by her daughter, Gwendolyn P. Simmons; her son
James W. Simmons, Jr. and daughter-in-law Dorothy Simmons; three
grandchildren, Jamahl H. Simmons, Bianca I. Simmons-Slater and Jourdan
B. Simmons; and three great-grandchildren, Jaxon J. Slater, Jamilah L.
Simmons and Brooklyn R. Slater and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visiting will be held on Tuesday November 21, 2017 from 11:30 am to
12:30 pm at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home 26 Mule Road, Toms River, NJ
08755 where a funeral service will take place at 12:30 PM. Burial will
follow at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River. Condolences may be
