With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Wanda Faye Baker-Hopkins, who peacefully departed this world on April 19, 2024, after a valiant battle with cancer. Wanda was a source of light and love to all who knew her, and her absence leaves an irreplaceable void in our lives.
Born and raised in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, Wanda was a beacon of love and kindness from the very beginning. In the early 1980s, she embarked on a new adventure, relocating to San Diego, California, alongside her former husband Aaron Baker Sr. It was there that Wanda's compassionate spirit found fulfillment as she pursued a career in nursing, touching the lives of countless individuals with her care and compassion.
Family was at the center of Wanda's world, and she was blessed with the love and support of her father Nathaniel and stepmother Bobbie Jewell Simmons, her sister's Vanesa Simmons-Woods, Y. Theresa Simmons-Watson (husband Heron), Melissa Simmons Lewis (husband Maurice L.), and Cassandra Simmons.
Wanda's greatest joy in life came from being a devoted mother to her children: Maragaret Steward Innocent (husband Kenneth), Aaron Baker Jr. (wife Tiffany), Iynna Baker (partner Dain), and Quintin Baker (wife Alisha). Her pride and love extended to her numerous grandchildren, whom she cherished dearly: DeAndre Steward, Love Steward, Elissa Steward, Chad DeSilva, Aaron Christopher Baker, Jaidyn Baker, Sanaa Baker-Williams, Daija Smallwood, Darius Smallwood, Xianna Baker, Javon Sears-Baker, Kalaiah Sears-Baker, and William Sears-Baker.
Wanda's nurturing spirit also touched the lives of her nieces and nephews, whom she adored: Reginald Simmons, Zachary Watson, Holly Woods, Carlton Rivera Simmons, Makayla Lewis, Desiree Simmons, Jaylen Simmons, Nathan Simmons, and Jeremiah McSwine.
In addition to her devotion to family, Wanda found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved playing bingo, embarking on adventures to new destinations, immersing herself in the magic of the theater, and, above all, spending cherished moments with her loved ones.
Later in life, Wanda embarked on a new chapter in Tolleson, Arizona, alongside her beloved husband of 23 years, Clarence Russell Hopkins. Though her heart was heavy after his passing in 2023, she remained steadfast in her resolve, drawing strength from the memories they shared and the love that surrounded her.
Now, Wanda has reunited with her loving mother Irma Jean Jordan-Simmons and her late husband Russell in the embrace of heaven, where they watch over us with eternal love and grace.
Though Wanda's physical presence may be gone, her spirit lives on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. May her memory be a source of comfort and inspiration, guiding us with her legacy of love and kindness.
Rest in peace, beautiful Wanda. You will be forever missed and eternally remembered.
