The youngest child of four, Ed was born November 26, 1927 in Shanghai, China. His family lived there several years while his parents were performing medical missionary work for the Seventh Day Adventist Church. They set up one of the first medical clinics in China. Ed spent most of his youth in Silver Springs, Maryland where his family eventually settled.
Before choosing a career, Ed left pre-med studies and decided to travel and see more of the world. It was while they were each working in 1 of the 2 resort hotels in Honolulu in the late 40’s that he met the love of his life, Monnie Smith. He surfed during the day and worked at night — and serenaded Monnie with his ukulele.
They were married in Seattle in 1950 and moved to San Francisco to attend college at UC Berkeley and start a family. They had three children, Mark and Donna were born in San Francisco and Richard was born in Portland. They bought a home and settled their family in Beaverton, Oregon.
Ed worked at Allis Chalmers and then went into the Insurance business at Oregon Auto working in sales and then as an adjuster. He and Monnie continued to enjoy exploring the world visiting Tahiti, Europe, South America, Mexico and many other exotic locations. They celebrated 65 years together in October 2015.
Ed enjoyed being active and loved walking every day, surfing, skiing, bike riding, dancing and windsurfing. He also loved getting a big cup of coffee while solving crossword puzzles and the Jumble.
Always interested in things, he was creative, enjoyed reading and science, and loved to tinker and invent. It was fun to see what he would come up with. He made Christmas fun with his habit of waiting until the last minute to do his shopping and coming through with some exciting and unusual gifts.
In retirement, Ed became quite a gardener and created an oasis in the backyard. His roses were amazing.
Most of all, Ed loved his family and was very proud of his children and his beloved grandchildren, Nevin, Ryan and Austin. He especially loved to attend their games and cheer them on. He was looking forward to the birth of his first great grandchild, Violet.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Monnie and his granddaughter, Alexandra. He is survived by his children Mark, Donna and Richard, daughter-in-law Janice, grandsons, Nevin, Ryan, and Austin Andrews, granddaughter-in-law Kelsey and great granddaughter Violet.
A celebration of Ed’s life was held Saturday, April 6, 2019 with family and friends.
Thank you Dad for all you have given us. We love you. You will be deeply missed.
