Patricia “Pat” was born a third generation Oregonian to Clifford Jones and Vera (Haener) Jones, on January 21, 1929, in Newberg, Oregon. Yamhill County was settled by her ancestors who were Oregon Trail pioneers. Although she was an only child, she was the oldest of 28 first cousins who grew up near her. Growing up on her parents’ farm she attended Fernwood Grade School and graduated from Newberg Union High School in 1946. An Associate degree from Mt. Angel Women’s College was earned in 1948 and she graduated in 1950, from Marylhurst College with a Bachelor of Science degree. During high school and college she was very active in women’s sports becoming team captain and earning sports letters.
She married Claude “C.I.” Smith in St. Paul, Oregon in 1950. They made their home in Newberg, where she taught elementary school. Together C.I. and Pat were blessed with seven children over the years: Barbara, Patrick, Paula, Nancy, Colleen, Lillian, and Julianne. They moved to Tigard in 1958.
Pat embraced her role as a loving homemaker for her husband and children. As a devoted mother, she attended, volunteered and often led the various activities in which her children were involved. She was often found helping in the classroom, at Girl Scout meetings and camping trips and at a variety of sport events including volleyball, basketball, track and swimming. For 16 years she was a fixture at Tigard High School Swim meets. As an active member of the St. Anthony’s School and Church; she served on several committees, often in leadership roles.
After the children were successfully raised she and C.I. enjoyed square dancing, golf and traveling. It was during this time that she taught English to Vietnamese immigrants. Throughout her life she had a passion for knitting, reading, history and genealogy. She was especially proud of her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Pat was an avid gardener with a beautifully cultivated yard full of flowers and vegetables. She delighted in baking bread, canning and was a skilled cake decorator, especially for her children’s weddings.
Patricia is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, C.I.
