Joel Christopher Wheaton passed away on November 5, 2024 from complications from scleroderma in Denver, Colorado. He was born on January 3, 1972 in Edina, Minnesota to the late Mary Jeanne Kennedy Wheaton and James Thomas Wheaton.
Joel grew up in Minnesota playing hockey and creating art of all kinds. He graduated from Richfield High School in 1990. He studied architecture at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West and earned an Associates degree in Architectural Drafting and Design Technology from Northwestern Technical Institute in 1993. In 1996 he moved to Colorado with his brother, Tom. He volunteered and coached many people in the disabled community which included wheelchair softball, bowling and sled hockey. In 2000, he and Kiffaney were married in Golden, CO. They both served their church community by teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and in Guest Services. In 2006, his son Afton was born and in 2008, his daughter, Wynne was born. Joel’s career consisted of animating, drafting and graphic design and he worked primarily with his brother Mike as a business partner with Web Welder LLC.
Joel is survived by a host of family including his wife, Kiffaney and their children Afton and Wynne Wheaton of Westminster, CO; his brother Tom Wheaton, his wife Angela and their children WIlliam and Maria of Golden, CO; his brother, Mike Wheaton and his children Trinity and Faith of Centennial, CO; his step-father, Joe Wheaton, and his father, Jim Wheaton and many extended family.
His celebration of life will be held Sunday, November 24, 2024 at 2 pm at Flatirons Community Church West End, 355 W. South Boulder Road in Lafayette, CO. The service will also be live streamed at: www.flatironschurch.com/memorial beginning 10 minutes before the service time. A recording will be available at a later date. If you are joining us in person, there will be a reception immediately following the service with a potluck finger food and dessert buffet. Please feel free to contribute if you’d like.
