January 11, 1933 – June 18, 2024
Joe Bill Heugel, 91, of Keystone Place at Legacy Ridge, passed away on June 18, 2024, after suffering a stroke.
Joe was born on January 11, 1933, in Denver, Colorado. With his parents, Gladys and Leo Heugel, and his younger brother Leo, Joe grew up in Aurora, Colorado and lived there his entire life except for his last five years at Keystone place.
In high school Joe met the love of his life, Shirley Robertson. They graduated together from Aurora Central High School in June 1951, and were married on Christmas Day that same year. Joe and Shirley had three children: Jim, Jodi, and Judi.
After serving in the Air Force from 1953 to 1957, Joe started as an apprentice plumber working all over the Denver metro area. He went on to become a Master Plumber and an instructor in the apprenticeship program of Plumbers Local Union 3. He was a foreman and then superintendent for Midwest Plumbing and Heating, overseeing the plumbing of construction projects such as Bronco’s Stadium, the cat facility at the Denver Zoo, Porter Hospital, and the Wells Fargo building (known as the ‘cash register building’ in Denver). For the last 13 years before retiring, Joe and Shirley ran their own business, Heugel Plumbing.
There was nothing Joe enjoyed more than four-wheeling in the Rockies to a hunting or fishing spot. He hunted every type of big game in Colorado with rifle, bow and muzzle loader. After retirement he learned to play golf and spent a lot of time with family—helping with their projects, and going to their sporting and Bible Quiz events. Joe was also a natural caregiver. He was very involved caring for his mother and stepfather in the last decades of their lives. He also provided care for Shirley for many years until her death in 2023—just 2 months after their 71st anniversary.
Joe is survived his brother Leo; children Jim (Cherie) Heugel, Jodi (David) Klepacki, and Judi (Bob) Welch; grandchildren Judson (Carrie) Heugel, Josie (Zack) Weingartner, Callie (Phil) Olson, Jordan (Ben) Mendoza, and Janelle (Anthony) Charterina; and great grandchildren Zane (17), Mira (16), Emmy (15), Maylee (14), Smith (12), Molly (12), Wyatt (9), Gabby (8), Delaney (8), Etta (7), Ezra (6), and Charlotte (3).
Please join us for a memorial service for Joe at 2pm on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at Keystone Place at Legacy Ridge, Assisted Living Activity Room (11150 Irving Dr., Westminster CO). Joe requested ‘come-as-you-are’ casual dress. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in memory of Joe to Kindred Church (kindredchurch.co).
The family would like to thank staff members at Keystone Place for the loving and professional care they provided Joe and Shirley during these last five years.
