James Edward Burrell

James (Jim) was the fifth child of six born to the late Willa Lee Wills and Charles Eugene Burrell on January 4, 1934 in Dawson, New Mexico. James was born with many gifts and talents. He was a quiet person and known to be an introvert. But James loved life and the Burrell family dynasty. As a child, Jim loved hanging out with his Poppa and brothers. He would always try to be the innocent and inconspicuous one, although often he was not. Jim worked very hard at being the sisters’ favorite brother.

In 1942, the Burrell family moved to Colorado and became members of the Evangelist Temple Church of God in Christ where his father served as Deacon. James came to know Jesus as his Lord and personal savior at a very young age. He served the Lord humbly and quietly for many years at the Progressive Church of God in Christ. One of James’ morning rituals was having a cup of coffee and reading his Bible. James served several churches in the capacity of building and grounds. As a young man, he played a “mean” guitar for congregational services.

After high school James chose to enlist and serve in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. In 1956 James was wedded to Lois Marie Davis. Three children were born to this union, Karrie, Marilyn and Dannie. After serving in the Army, Jim worked ten years for the State of Colorado as a Highway Patrolman. He was most proud to serve his country and state. James also worked as a security guard for Brown Disk, and as a machinist with the Gates Rubber Company.

James had a favorite saying, “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” But there is one thing for sure, if it was broken, James could fix it. He was very good with his hands; including but not limited to mechanics, small machine repairs, carpentry and picking the guitar. James’ hobbies included fishing, hunting and working jigsaw and word puzzles, and riding motorcycles. James was a true sports buff; they were all his favorites.

Over the course of his life, James fought many health challenges, but never once complained. In 2018, James would face his biggest giant, being diagnosed with multiple types of Dementia including Alzheimer. His personal and medical needs during his last years were overseen by his oldest daughter, Karrie Jackson, and his niece, Cheri Proctor, respectively.

James was preceded in death by his parents Willa and Charles Burrell Sr., brother Charles Burrell, Jr., sisters Dorothy Burrell, Joyce Proctor, and Bernice Greene.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved and youngest brother, Kenneth (Linda) Burrell, his daughters, Karrie (Homer) Jackson, Marilyn Strother Gunter (Dwayne), his son Dannie Burrell; grandchildren Meika, Brittany, Keesha, Dannie Jr., and Danielle; 3 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and special friends, including his animal companion and best friend, Jake.

“If you must cry for me, make sure they are tears of joy for I am not dead; I am now truly alive.

If your heart must ache for me, make sure it is longing to meet me with Jesus on the other side.

If your soul feels lonely without me, know that I didn’t take away our memories; they will live on.

If you miss my presence, take my mantle and run the race until you reach your heavenly home."
