Douglas Stanford Benning

Doug was born in Paterson, N.J. to Harvey Benning and Katharine Sherman. He attended Boonton High School and later, University of Maine. He was the youngest of 3 children.

Doug’s Dad taught him to fly a plane at age 16, and he was later able to incorporate his love of flying into a full time career with U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Doug graduated from University of Maine in 1966 w/ a Science Degree, and was then drafted into the U.S. Army. After spending 2 years in both Fort Knox, Ky and Fort Leonard Wood, MO as Training Officer he was sent to VietNam. He served as 1st Platoon Leader, “H” Troop, 17th Cavalry.

Upon returning in 1969, he married and began his career as a Flyway Biologist 1st in Texas, soon moving to Falls Church, VA. Eventually in 1975 he was able to move to beautiful Colorado. At first, living in Conifer he had 2 children, Heather and Peter Benning. His work with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service had him doing bird population surveys while flying his single engine Cessna plane at low altitudes in central USA and Canada.

Doug was remarried to Barb in 1979 and they adopted Nicholas in 1988. Home was in Bailey, CO with a recent move to Pine, CO. Doug loved the Colorado mountains, and enjoyed bowhunting deer for many years after retiring. He also enjoyed travelling with the 5th wheel from coast to coast in both USA and Canada. After retiring he also enjoyed several overseas trips, exploring various parts of Europe with Barb. They were happily married 45+ years.

Doug retired after 31 years in the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. He made many lifelong friends through his work in both the U. S. and Canada, as well as military friends that he reconnected with in summer reunions. He also remained close with his best friends from his days at University of Maine. He is survived by his wife Barbara, brother Scott, s-i-l Judy, sister Joanne and his 3 children: Heather, Peter and Nicholas Benning… and 3 grandchildren: Jonah, Micah and Aleah Benning.

Doug loved life! He loved all of his children, his extended family and his country! Most recently he made the decision to ask Jesus into his heart…and was eager to share his new found faith.

Doug requested that there be no formal funeral services. Internment will be at the Fort Logan National Cemetery with Dignity Funeral Services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doug’s name to MercyShips.org
