Dean Edward Smith, of Payson, Arizona, died on February 17, 2024, from a prolonged battle with cancer. Dean was 85 years old. He was born Dean Edward Smith in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado on November 28, 1938, to Norman and Louise Smith.
Dean was wonderful person and a loyal friend. He left a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know him. After graduating from Stratton High School, he went to work for a trucking company in Denver. He later became an owner/operator of his own remarkably thriving trucking company.
On August 10, 1957, he married Shirley Collins. They lived in Arvada, Colorado, for most of their marriage. He loved working on cars and was a successful race car driver. Other hobbies included fishing and playing pool. Dean was a skilled pool player, winning multiple pool tournaments and he even played and won a tournament one month before his death.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Shirley. Dean is survived by his two brothers, Doyle (Aurey) Smith and Denis (Judy) Smith; four children, Deanna Mumma, Lary (Patricia) Smith, Shirlene (Bruce) Balsley, and Kimberly (Dennis) Klein; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
A Viewing for Dean will be 9:30am, Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Olinger Highland Mortuary & Cemetery, 10201 Grant St, Thornton, CO 80229. Graveside services and an intimate gathering will follow 11:00am at Elmwood Cemetery, 14800 Brighton Road, Brighton, Colorado.
