Shirley Sellen, a pioneer and trailblazer, peacefully passed away three weeks before her 98th birthday, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, determination, and service. She is survived by her loving family and cousins: Linda Van Praagh (David Van Praagh, predeceased 2016), Eric Van Praagh, Marlise Wilson, Elaine Scott, Miranda Murray, and James Murray.
Shirley's career journey began in 1943 at Bell Canada, and in 1951, she ventured into the world of advertising, where her passion and talent propelled her to remarkable heights. Her illustrious career culminated in 1991 when she retired as the General Manager for the Ontario Advertising Review Board (ARB). A true advocate for women's empowerment, Shirley shattered stereotypes and paved the way for generations of women in her field. During her tenure at the ARB, Shirley's leadership was exemplary, leading her to become the acting ARB Chairman, a testament to her dedication and expertise. Even after retirement, Shirley remained active in volunteer work, notably at St. John’s Rehab Centre, where her contributions made a lasting impact.
For the past two decades, Shirley called Amica-Swan Lake in Markham her home, where she was an integral part of the community. Her sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor brightened the lives of those around her, leaving cherished memories for all who knew her.
Shirley Sellen's legacy is one of courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication to making the world a better place. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of crossing paths with this remarkable woman.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley’s memory to Children Believe (formerly Christian Children’s Fund of Canada) would be welcomed, as she was an active sponsor of this charity for many decades.
