Mary Jane "Marie" Alexandria Wright

The family of Mary Jane Alexandria Danis Wright, known as Marie, is deeply saddened to announce her passing on October 13, 2024, in her 92nd year. Born in Cornwall, Ontario on July 8, 1933, Marie left this world peacefully, having received the therapeutic and compassionate care of the staff in the Emergency, Medical, and Hospice Departments at Mackenzie Health Hospital in Richmond Hill, and the comforting presence and prayers of family and faithful friends.

Marie, the second eldest of seven children, was predeceased by her cherished daughter Frances Anne Morrison in June of this year, by her parents, Honourable Rene Alexander Danis and Genevieve Gillis, five of her six siblings, Daniel, Grant (Marguerite), Suzanne (Ed) Sawchuk, Roger, and Julie Danis Mackenzie, two nephews Michael, and Roger Jr. Marie is survived by her sister Nancy Danis Grant and sisters in law Annette and Joan, as well as 11 nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.

At the age of eight, Marie's family relocated from Cornwall to Cochrane following her father's promotion from Family Court Law to District Court Judge. Cochrane became home for many happy years. Marie deeply missed her hometown while she was in boarding school at the Congregation of The Sisters of Notre Dame in Ottawa. The family moved to Toronto when her father was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario.

Marie then pursued her studies at the University of Ottawa School of Nursing, where she graduated in 1955. She began her nursing career at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, later working as a private duty nurse at Humber Memorial Hospital, before transitioning into private home nursing. After a fulfilling 40-year career in the medical field, she retired, leaving a lasting impact on those she cared for.

Marie was deeply influenced by her father’s strong moral example, which guided her throughout her life. She was a faithful practicing Catholic, starting her day with mass whenever possible, and was an active member of the Daughters of Isabella, and the Catholic Women’s League at St. Joan of Arc Church, and later at St. Luke’s Parish in Thornhill, where she also became a member of their Circle of Friends Seniors Group.

Known for her vibrant spirit and commitment to community, both at St. Luke’s Lodge where she lived and behind the welcome desk at the Thornhill Seniors’ Centre, Marie arranged activities, helped friends whenever she could, took part in sports, knitting, euchre, and bingo, to name just a few of the many activities offered at the Lodge and Centre. Even with failing health, she made an effort to join her friends.

A gifted gardener, animal and nature lover, a woman devoted to her family and friends, Marie Wright will be lovingly remembered for her welcoming spirit, her endearing smile, and the indelible mark she left on all who knew her.
