Loretta McCann ( nee Filion ) passed away on August 31st, 2023 at the Houses of Providence in Toronto. She was the second youngest of six children, born to Emery and Josephine Filion of Cornwall, Ontario. She was the wife of Philip McCann ( d.1993 ) and the mother of four children: Paul ( Dorel ), Denise, Peter ( Patricia ) and Daniel ( d.1997) . She is the loving grandmother of Kathleen ( Noel), Brendan ( Carrie ), Andrew (Julie ), Amy ( Charles) Mark ( Katie ) and the great-grandmother of Keeley, Ainsley, Carter, Charlie and Minnie.
Loretta Filion was born on February 15,1920, into a traditional French-Canadian family. She loved her childhood days and was the athletic one in the family. In high school she became the starting guard on the varsity basketball team at the height of 5’4.” In 1938, as a result her father’s political connections, she came to Toronto to work at the Workman’s Compensation Board as a translator and stenographer.
It was a lonely and difficult time for a young French-Canadian girl to make her way in what seemed to be a foreign environment. She lived for a year at Rosary Hall, a residence for out-of-town Catholic working women. Then she moved to St. Clair and Dufferin and St. Clare’s parish where she learned to play bridge: it became a lifelong passion. At a parish CYO event, she met her future husband, Philip. They married in 1947 and lived with the McCann family on Atlas Ave., where in 1948 Paul was born . In 1950, the young family moved to North Toronto near the intersection of Bayview/Millwood, an area of the city she absolutely loved. It was here that with a loving mother’s hand, she relished watching her children grow.
She began to work out of the home in the early 70s, mostly the federal government in the Supply and Services Department. After retirement, she pursued with gusto her love of bridge,
sometimes playing four times a week. Full of joy, she loved people, laughter, music, reading, food, entertainment, and the seasons. Most of all she loved her family. She was, and will always be, a tremendous blessing. May God bless her.
