Joan Elizabeth Magee

Peacefully at McKenzie Health Palliative Care

surrounded by her family on Friday October 11th, 2019, in

her 87 ½ th year.

Loving wife of the late James Frederick, Mother of

David and his wife Tracy, Cathy and her husband Nate

Cantor.

Devoted Grandma of Patrick (Maria), Josh, Kimberly,

Jessica and Kevin.

She will be sadly missed by her sister Sheila Hassefelt,

brother-in-law Ted Magee (Shirley) and many Nieces

and Nephews.

Lovingly remembered by her dear friends Joan Costas

and Ria Furmanek as well as the many friends she made

throughout her lifetime.

Joan's father passed away when she was only 13 and at

the age of 15 she quit school to work and help support

the family. During this time she also managed to take up

high diving, synchronized swimming and a life guard

course.

Joan met her husband Jim at a dance at the Masonic

Temple in Toronto and were married August 2, 1952.

They bought a house and moved into the most incredible

neighborhood on Devondale Ave. in Willowdale. There

they enjoyed life and raised two wonderful children and

made many lifelong friends they considered family.

Joan had several jobs through the years. She worked for

McNaughton Engineering for 20 years as the office

manager.

The Family spent many memorable summers at Shadow

Lake and convinced friends and family to join them.

Joan loved to travel and the first big trip was to the east

coast with the whole family. Once the kids left home

Joan and Jim did some traveling on their own enjoying

each others company.

They remained married for 54 years until Jim's death at

which time Joan moved to her condominium on Baif

Blvd. There she made many wonderful new friends.

It didn't take long before Joan was passionately involved

with the garden and decorating committee.

Joan was an avid card player teaching the grandchildren

to play many different games. At a later age she started to

learn how to play bridge which helped keep her mind

active. She was always up for a good game of cards.

Joan was a true friend to many people and was extremely

well liked and appreciated for her kindness; her generous

spirit and her sense of fun. Everyone who knew Joan was

better for having had the privilege of her friendship. She

would pray for people when they needed help; she would

put others first before herself; cook for others when they

couldn't; never forget a birthday or anniversary with a

timely sent card. Her smile was contagious and a hug was

given freely. She made notes on everything, from the

date she met one of her best friends Joan Costas to what

each of her grandchildren were up to.

Some of Joan's accomplishments during her lifetime

were being a Sunday School Teacher, baking, cooking,

crocheting, knitting, dancing, music, making dolls,

traveling and simply spending time with family.

Joan was very devoted to her faith and went to church

every Sunday, as well as attending bible study.

We would like to thank all the staff in the Stroke and

Palliative Care Unit at McKenzie Health Hospital for the

exceptional care and compassion they showed Joan and

our family.

A memorial service will be held at the Grace Baptist

Church located at 270 Weldrick Road W Richmond Hill,

Saturday November 9th, 2019 at 11:00 am with a

reception and refreshments to follow at Club 66, 66 Baif

Blvd., Richmond Hill, Ontario from 1:00 to 5:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations made in Joan's memory to

the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of your

choice would be greatly appreciated by her family.

Here's to you Mom, till we see you again and enjoy a

glass of white wine together sitting in the garden.
